Miracle Grow potting soil for germinated seeds

I soaked seeds and all five opened and got tails. I planted them in Miracle grow moisture control soil and have them under a good fluorescent grow light, on 24 hours… It has been three days and nothing has emerged from the soil yet… Am I being impatient? Did I kill them with the wrong soil?

Welcome to the forum!

I doubt that you’ve killed them with the wrong soil, but cannabis does struggle in Miracle Grow products.

There are a few reasons for this. The moisture control feature retains water whereas cannabis prefers wet/dry cycles every couple of days. Miracle Grow’s “Feeds for months” feature does 2 things cannabis doesn’t like. The soil releases nutrients every time you water and nukes your plants with nutrients. The release of those nutrients also submarines the pH in your soil.

I would never make this mistake again, haha. I need to be careful to not water them again, I guess. I misted the top with filtered water this morning. I’m hoping that I’m just being impatient of the tails growing through the soil, etc…

How deep did you plant the seeds? They only need to be deep enough to cover with soil. If you planted them deeper then that you can brush some covering soil away.

Keeping them domed until they pop up can also be helpful in keeping them from drying out before they have a chance to develop a tap root.

I only put them about a thumbnail down, with tail pointing up. Maybe 3/4, of a matchstick in deepest planting. I was scared of over watering, so I watered before planting, but not afterwards. They are in grow bags where the water goes out the bottoms. After two days, I sprayed the top soil with a mister slightly. I won’t water again. . I have been using a dome, the whole time. Scared, I might be suffocating them with the dome, but leaving on…
Not using a heating mat. because the light keeps the flooring under their tray kind of warm to touch. I have a heating mat though if suggested… Worried of getting them too warm, or baking them with the mat.

As long as lights are on 24/0 there is sufficient heat.

The tails that pop out of the seed are the tap root and should be planted tap root down. Don’t panic if you planted the other way around, I just drop mine in a hole and it figures it out. It will just take longer. They don’t need to be more then an 1/8 deep. You may want to carefully take a peek at one and see what it is doing, if you are careful you might be able to help them out.

Not sure if this will help this time around, but maybe next time. I use seed starter in the top inch or so when starting seeds since to holds just the right amount of moisture and is hard to overwater. It also seems to make it easier for the seedling to emerge and knock the shell off at the same time.

Most growers figure out a method that works for them and there are many of us who have lost a few seeds along the way. You’ll figure it out.

Miracle grow no good ecslecially for babies…they don’t like a lot of notes right now ecslecially they can handle it in a few weeks but right now there fragile and will be roasted by extended release… IF they sprout then I’d give a lily time rinse off roots and transplant them before they get big and it’s a bigger problem

Am I hearing that right you planted the tap root up?? There’s so many ways to germinate. I suggest go to YouTube and watch every germination video possible. Then developed your own method following the key elements needed for the bean to pop.

One of the shoots is coming out of the soil now. It is brown in color. Assumed it was getting too much heat and raised the lights a little to lessen the heat.
Would you assume the brown was a drying out, heated up, characteristic?

If you can see it, haha.

Hmm well that’s upside down, it’ll reorient itself but takes more time…
