Ok so just finishing up drying and now cureing some of my plants, 6 of 12 have been trimmed and into grove bags so far. I tested with moisture meter on buds, readings from 9-13%, drying started 1-2 and again ended for 6 of them today 1-12. I have 6 left hanging that will need to be trimmed and also into grove bags or jars for comparison.
My questions now areā¦.
Will smell get better as they continue to cure?
I have Humidity meters in all bags, all 6 after bagging were reading 49-53 rh. The bags say 58-62%. Did I already over dry with no hopes of smell getting better?? Weed doesnāt smell absolutely horrid but not great either yet? But so far better than expected
I litterly just put them all in bags less than half hr before posting this. Rh already seams to be moving upš
Terpenes definitely get more pronounced as you cure. That should lead to more of a smell and better taste. Iād give it at least a day to see if the RH goes up in the bag. If not you can put a lettuce leaf, slice of apple peel or something like that in there to add a little moisture. If I was betting on it Iād say itāll be just fine though.
Thatās been my experience, smell best upon cutting down, that decreases and changes while hanging. Then trimming/jarring it leaves nice smell on fingers but doesnt smell great otherwise. Then it gets better again after curing.
Congrats @Mjm697 I was rootin for ya to finish all 12 thatās a lotta work.
Lol you nailed it man lol everything you said in order exactly!youāre giving me hope! Yup fingers smell great when cutting them for sure! They currently smell like nothing or a little earthy hayish while stuffed up to my nose(but way better than first outdoor grow)
And yes omg this is so much work! Canāt believe I got 6 done so far, hopefully have everything in bags no later than Sunday, I will hit this thread with updates. Iām just really hoping for some non hay smelling decent tasting stuff
I hope ya get some variety across the harvest. The hay smell kind of like lawn-mowing, grassy, often goes away if thereās any amount of thc and terps in there. Consume any of it yet (of couse you did ) what do ya think of itās potentcy
You will like the Grove bags. I love the cure they do. It will have a hay smell for a couple weeks but it goes away with time. Let it cure for no less than 3 weeks, longer better. Any bags you plan to cure longer heat seal to get the best performance out of the bag. I never check the moisture in my buds. On day 9 of hanging in tent at 60%rh ill start checking how the stems snap. When they get good and snappy, into the bags they go. Once you do it a few times it will come easy to you. I also always have some frozen wet trim on hand in case I need to get some moisture back into them once i bag em. Not a bad idea going forward.
I would be happy with that, I like it better closer to 58% than 62%, it is harder to break up before using it when it is at 62%. But that is just me.
Also placing a small fresh cut fan leaf in the bag will bring the rh up very well, without getting it too damp, and you donāt need to worry about removing a leaf from the bag.
Sounds like you will have a lot of Grove Bags to store. Be sure to leave them a little room to let them breathe, and donāt pack them too tightly for storage.
I have found that the two ounce bags store well with the one ounce bags. The 1/4 pound bags are a little too tall to store well on the same shelf with the smaller ones. I like to heat seal the bags so that I can easily tell which one has already been opened.
My experience with the bags is after 1 month it is smokeable but flavor and ācureā is much beter after 2 months. After 2 months i consider it cured
Ok finally!!..ā¦ā¦ everything has been dried and now all cureing in grove bags. Thank all of you for your help with my 42 thousand posts I really really appreciated all your help and advice! Hereās what I left off with
12 plants in bags, 5 at 55-57 the rest are below 55-44rh.
I just spent a couple hours of reading everything from the cure stops at 55 ? To it doesnāt matter?
It is what it is, some smelled good already going into bags as others had no smell at all? Only a couple still smell hayish, so not sure what to expect, they are put away for at least a month or so before I will revisit, I tried a little Friday night and last night, both days smoked threw a water pipe but both tasted decent, smooth no cough , one was still wet and didnāt wanna stay lit, Iām convinced some of it will be awesome, and yes it was very very good! No anxiety with a welcoming couch lock.
On to my next grow! Tent is already cleaned and seeds have arrived (from here of course ) Iām doing all grand daddy purple autos this try.
I am sure you are glad to be finished with the trimming. The only part that feels like work to me. I have evolved to prefer wet trimming by hand before drying. I bought one of those trim bowls when Amazon had them on sale for $45. I tried this on a small 5 ounce dry harvest, and did not care for it on dry buds. Seems to cut off too much of the flower. But if I was doing as much trimming as you, I would reconsider how well it works. I think I will give it a try on wet trim next and see how it works. The only problem with that is all of the buds will need to be removed from the stem. I like to wet trim the buds while leaving them on the stem, and then hanging to dry. It looks like I maybe stuck with hand trimming. I have really come to like those little spring loaded scissors.
Lol I spent 700 bucks on one of those fancy electric standup wet trimmers, all it did was beat the shit outta the buds, thank god I only did one plant as it looked like I performed an exorcism! I was fortunate enough to have sent it back without issues, I trimmed last harvest wet, and this harvest dry, so far Iām leaning on dry trimming because it seams to have slowed down the dry. And yes I love those spring loaded scissors
Yes I use SOS to clean the tools and hands, it works great to clean. I was just wondering if there is some type of food grade wax that you could treat the metal scissors with to prevent the stuff from sticking so much. And maybe allow more time between cleaning the tools.
