So now that my first plant is down I’ve done a lot of research about drying and curing methods. It has been hanging upside down in 70 degrees 55% humidity for 48 hours now. She was wet trimmed. The reason I ask THIS question is because she smells like grass. Some people say this is normal, and it will fade with a cure. some say their bud smells dank all the way through drying. So I wanted to see how common it is that they smell like grass while drying and before cured(because before I cut this girl down, oh man she stunk up my whole house. Now it’s just a mowed lawn .
I had a white widow auto harvest that smelled like cut grass for months after cure
I also wet trim.
My entire drying area/room reeks like dank bud for 4-5 days. Then it settles down. I jar it, it gets a bit haylike sometimes while curing, but eventually it smells really good. Sometimes I get a yeasty/b.o. smell along with the dank.
Congratulations on your first plant. As far as smell goes, hay is the normal smell to start with at my house. It improves in a week or two. I have never been able to produce that “knock you over Skunk Pine “ kind of overwhelming smell. There’s a secret they haven’t told me yet.
That’s no good did you ever figure out why?
Very good to know! But your grass/ hay smell goes away at least after the cure?
For the first day I definitely noticed it was still pungent in the drying room. Just when I checked on her today I found the grass smell. Hope I get that dank smell back after a good cure.
It goes away, leaving great weed , just not like the old days when you could smell a bud from 10 feet away.
Trimming off as much of the leaf as one can, to get just the flower, seems to decrease the hay-ness.
Nice cola!
I trim even more. I basically give it a crew cut.
Thank you very much! She smelled like a fresh batch of berries hope it comes back. I planned on doing one more manicure before it went into jars, because I know the inside towards the center of the cola there are still probably a lot of leaves that need trimmed. Would it be better to snip all the buds off of the cola or leave them together?
I leave them together so they dry slower. Ill snip them up smaller before curing.
If you have issues with humidity you might separate them. Wouldn’t want any mold developing in that big fat beautiful cola.
Probably dried too fast
My experience has been once it smells like hay it always smells like hay. There’s so many things that can go wrong in harvest and drying. In farming terms it “took a heat” at some point. I’ve lost good smelling weed like that a time or two. It makes you wanna throw it in the garbage. Every time you smell it you’ll remember it. I can’t smoke weed that smells like that till this very day without thinking of my experience.
Freeze dry is the way I use and it has never failed me. Sorry for your loss
Thanks for the info. Still hopeful it’ll come back with a good cure. never heard of freeze-drying. can you elaborate if you have time?
I wish you’d ask me before. It’s the easiest thing in the world to do. Clean out your freezer a week or so before hand and put some armor hammer baking soda in to get rid of any smells. Cut your plant one branch at a time and place in the freezer. Make sure it doesn’t get warm,as best you can, between your grow area and the freezer. Check daily for a few days until dry. The freezer has to be a frost free freezer for this to work.
Let me know if you get rid of the smell of hay. People need to know because there’s not a single grower out here that hasn’t done the same thing. Happy growing
Nice bud there!
Ended up putting her into jars today total drying time of 6 days. I broke up one of the buds just to get a good idea of how different it will be when it’s cured, and oh man there’s that smell that I was missing!! Absolutely rank. which I’m hoping is good news because the cure is supposed to draw that from the inside of the bud back to the outside correct? Needless to say I smoked it and got a really good high. Exactly what i wanted ILGM IS THE BEST
Do you cut off all leaves? Then do you use the leaves for something else?
