Buds losing beautiful smell while drying

I’ve been drying my buds for 2 days. They seem to have lost its beautiful smell. Is it because they are drying or am I doing something wrong? The buds smell weird

This happens often. The smell will come back during the cure. Sometimes the smell stays, and sometimes it turns to a grassy, hay smell while drying. But that’s what the cure is for. Give it a couple of weeks.

Just like @Borderryan22 said they change through the process. My current harvest smelled like hay/grass for a couple days after I hung them up but now are getting that good smell back. Once you jar/bag them up it will intensify and get the smell you expect back.

Thanks all. I was nervous I fucked something up. This is my first harvest.

Just releasing the chlorophyll I’d guess.

This is exactly it. They stink like grass (in a bad way) til they’re totally ready for the cure. Then you cure it, and after a week or three, the gross grass stink goes away and the beautiful bud aroma returns to the surface

I’ve noticed some of my buds still growing don’t smell as strong as they did a few weeks ago, not as sticky either. Does that generally seem weather and genetics related or did I do something wrong?

Everything above this post is spot on.
It could also be from too quick of a dry. What conditions are you drying in?

You can eliminate alot of that grassy smell by giving only phd water during the last week or so in flower. The plant will use up alot of the stored nutes in leaves and chloraphyll will begin to break down before you even get her into drying conditions. Makes for pretty fall colors in the leaves too.

Also, feeding unsulphered molasses during flower will increase your plants terpene production. Giving you more smell and taste.

Outside in heavy rain?

Seems like it could be a few things. If indoors, i usually look towards lights. If they’re too intense at the tail end of flower, they can just dry her out instead of helping enhance production. If there’s a fan or intense wind, again, it can just be too much and be drying her out. Last thing may be a nutrient/pH issue, but my firsthand experience leans heavier towards light intensity. I actually just canned a plant in a solo cup who dried out literally overnight. Her buds almost looked burnt - all just meh brown. Not rot, just crisp. It was absolutely from being all by her lonesome under too intense of lighting - I did not refigure her DLI after removing two plants near her which likely gave her quite a bit of cover with their canopies.

We did get a lot of hard, heavy rain this last month @Docnraq. Some of the girls didn’t seem bothered by it, in fact they ate it up. So I’m gonna take this as genetics and give those strains that did well a higher rating for my outdoor grows. I did plan on shutting off my drip system and only giving plan PH water the last week. Problem is how can I be sure its the last week.

@Graysin we have had heavy winds that bent some of my plants almost 90 degrees. I’m not sure, but it certainly could be nutrient deficient on my part. I don’t test runoff or soil PH. I figure I made the best soil I was able, and hope they like it. I top dress every few weeks, but it still seems weird. I’ve got one drying now that I don’t even know if she’ll get me high, went from covered in sticky sugars to dry and loathsome. I almost didn’t even bother to dry it. I figure I could use the practice (drying) though and the plants on deck for the drying space can wait a little longer.

So many things to keep track of my stoner brain has a hard time while my sober brain says write it down. Next grow for sure I will have me a journal.

This is the only way I ever know anything. I’m sober 95% of the time and forget everything anyway. As you say, there are so many moving parts to keep track of, especially if you are growing multiple strains. I have a plant flowering now that is rather shamefully labeled “GDP or C99 or Lemon Tree or Frosted Jungle” because I cut clones, didn’t label them, all but one died. She could be any of them. Although thankfully now that she’s in flower I believe with some firmness she’s my C99

As the flower dries it pulls all extra moisture from the interior of the stems. Pushing it out word cause it to smell like grass or hay. This is normal and called off gassing.

Trichomes tell the tale. Its still not exact though. One of those things you pick up as you grow. Lotsa closeup or microscope pics help too. Then there is all your growmies here when about 90% of your white hairs are red start checking and post up some pics.

I use an app called Jane. Its awesome and free at least up to 8 plants at a time. Keeps track of everything germ through cure.

@Graysin, I have one that I’m not sure about. I call her ‘unknown quantity’ Growing 4 strains 2 seasons in a row I’m starting to see the difference in bud structure between Chocolope, Big bud, Super skunk and Amnesia haze. Jack Heraer is an entirely different beast. My unknown quality came in the pack of Jack H seeds. She only grew 2 and 1/2 feet in 7 months, like a stunted auto flower, She just came out of dry and happy to say I have about four OZs of nice sized buds. Smells a little citrusy as well, not the same as the piney/sage like smell of the Jack H.

@Docnraq I’ve been checking the trichomes with a lighted jewelers loop @W.B.elpaso gave me. Still cloudy very little Amber. That app sounds cool, maybe I can find it for my laptop as I don’t own a smart phone. I lean luddite in a lot of ways. Thats probably why I prefer outdoors/soils. I’m old enough to remember when the hairs turning red was our ‘sign’ they were done.

When I was younger I had a friend who always would tell me about different techniques for growing, he swore by wrapping a garbage bag over plant for 3 days to trigger flower and again right before harvest. Fast forward 17 years and almost nothing he swore by, are worth while technique. It makes me laugh, and appreciate this forum often.

Great point. I love this place and all the help it provides me. I’m a skeptic by nature and have learned pretty well over the years how to separate the wheat from the chaff.

As I’m sure you’ve read along the way…Drying at 60%humidity and 60°f for up 10+ days will get you Magic! Like the best you’ve ever had! It’s hard to make such an environment…but Going up to 70f, and lower humidity like 50h can still work…but it reduces the “loud” terp factor by an unknown degree…but is more easily to create… 70f/50h is walking the line for me, otherwise I’ll get hay, and then it’ll take months to sweat and cure it back to safety.

I got the wedryerxl. My last grow didn’t get that hay smell using it. I had an 8 day dry and 11 day if i remember right. Malawi kicked my butt!!

I was looking at those a few months back but didn’t get one. They have a charcoal filter don’t they? Are they worth it?
