Help drying, curing

Hey,

I just finnished my first grow. When I harvested the weed had a nice smell to it. I hung it upsidedown in the dark 2 days later I placed it in a plastic bag to sweat out the buds for and afternoon (always in the dark) and finnished drying for another 3 days. I then placed them for 2 weeks in mason jars to cure.

The problem is that when the weed dried it lost its fragrance. Sure when I grind the buds I get some of the smell but even opening the jars where the buds are I can hardly smell that typical weed smell we all love. why ? is there anything I can do better?

Thanx in advance for any help

Did you trim the leaves from the buds?

Yes I trimmed leaves. It was the first thing I did actually

Maybe curing longer will help bring out the terpenes. I noticed that after about a week of curing mine had a lot ā€œgreenerā€ smell than when they were flowering.

    sadly, yes you will see some of the scent leave during drying. anything will have a stronger scent when its wet, especially weed. ever smelled a dry dog? ever smelled a wet one? notice how they smell a lot stronger wet? this is the same as you are experiencing.

@DaSofaSurfer

Make sure there drying slowly cuz if they dry fast u will lose all the smell & u canā€™t get the smell back if u dry them 2 fastā€¦

and if your humidity is too low (below 45) then you will loose smell and flavor. try to keep it between 45 and 55 with your temps between 65 and 75. the outside of the buds get crispy but once you jar them the internal moisture will sweat out along with that smell you grew to love. just donā€™t jar too soon or you will have a weird dill smell that takes forever to cure out.

@DaSofaSurfer Iā€™m a beginner and I am on my 2nd outside grow and over the fall and winter my 1st inside grow. On all my grows so far I lost the smell of my buds too. Once they dried I put them in jarā€™s I waited weeks to a month and the smell came backšŸ˜

Agreed been there done that

When I dried the harvest I am talking about we were at the peak of a hot summer. Now the temp has come down a bit. Today was 30 celcius (86 farenheit) max and 75% humidity. I have them dry in a dark closet I dont have air conditioner am wondering what can I do to have them dry slower ?

I understand wet dog dry dog theory but even with dry weed you are supposed to be able to smell it. Popping that jar and instead of dank skunk weed Id be smelling something between hay and grass was just sacriligious My buds were dank, dense, sticky and smelly after drying the smell was gone sure when I would grind it would have a hint but I feel like I had a pretty good harvest and then I shit the bed with the drying/curing part hence my fustration

In about 2 months hopefully Ill get another harvest would like to a better job this time.

Thank you all for your replys

Yes Iā€™m not all onboard wet dog/dry dog because oregano smells more of you grind it in your hand and release the oils yes oils. Did we forget that oil is not water and has a scent?
