Help me figure out what went wrong

Just finished my second grow. I had a plant that I think was beautiful. Of course I had seen better but I was very proud of the way it looked. Throughout the whole grow the smell was lacking.
I chopped it down and hung it up to dry. I dried it for 5 days. Some stems were snapping, some buds were coming off without strings. The buds felt EXTREMELY dry, and during trim I had sugar leaves just falling off at the slightest touch. I think I probably damaged a bunch of trichomes during trim because it was just so dry.
I jarred it up and to my surprise, the hygrometer was reading 67%. So even though the bud was dry enough that I’m losing trichomes, it wasn’t “dry enough” to reach that 62% sweet spot in the jar? The smell is the biggest disappointment. I guess maybe it’s the hay smell everyone talks about, but the humidity in the jars is now down to 62%.
So what do you think? I know it’s a tough question to answer but I figured I’d put it out and see what you all could come up with. Why does bud that looks great until the very end look mediocre at best after drying/during cure? Why does the bud feel straight up crispy dry and have trichomes straight flaking off, but then be too wet to go right into jars for curing? And why is the smell so severely lacking? It truly doesn’t even really smell like weed. Grown in Happy Frog and fed with a random cannabis fertilizer on Amazon called growth science nutrients

What strain and where did you get the bean from? Might be bad genetics?

Keep the rh at around 60% in the jars for a few weeks or so. You may be surprised how well it turns out.

That said, it does sound like it dried too fast. We all had this challenge when we first started.

Looks good though. Might be good to keif up or make edibles? Have you tried it? Is it sticky?

My rh was def too low. I’m kinda at the mercy of outdoor weather conditions but next time I’ll run the humidifier higher. I didn’t hang the whole plant, but individual branches. I left all the fan leaves on though, hoping that would slow it down.

It was a freebie from nasc. Actually don’t know the strain. Would bad genetics cause good growth but a poor dried product?

The high is ok. Not sticky to the touch but there is a little tackiness to your fingers after handling it. Smoked some fresh off the plant and the taste was good, but after curing for a few days the taste is not as good. Confusing

That’s my suspicion but how do you manage that? Is it ok to use a humidifier in the drying tent?

A humidifier can work but can sometimes be too much, too fast.

A less aggressive approach is to put a bucket half full of water. Hang a towel so that the bottom of the towel hanging in the water. Blowing a fan across the wet towel can help if the rH is particularly low. Keeping the temperature below 70 really helps.

In our area, the January time frame (when I will chop this time) is super dry. I have hung my plants inside inverted trash bags to keep the humidity up. Be careful with this because if you don’t keep it vented you can end up with a terrible mold problem and lose an entire plant.

I’ll try that. It’s only my second grow and I haven’t ever really paid attention to weather patterns until now. Next grow will be in the spring a humidity is pretty high.
Thinking about it, there’s a heater in the tent that probably contributed to the problem. We had a few 30 degree nights and even when it ran it didn’t seem to have a huge effect on the rh, but I probably should’ve taken low temps over a heater.

When I use my Wedryer in dry conditions…always in my climate…I have to pull early. Sometimes bad hay smell from the fast drying. I grow a lot for a small medical circle so cant always get 30 day minimum cure before they need it.
That being said I will jar. Wait till rh stabilizes. If 68 or higher I paper bag a day. At 67 I burp down to 62.
There I can allow it to go out to our folks. THEY take a couple of lids each and set 1.5 or so oz to cure. Burn the harsh for a couple weeks. By the time they hit the lid curing that shit will be fire. Smell comes. Flowers tighten. Some thc degradation giving more body effect than fresh cut etc.
The point is that patience will pay off. Some strains wont give a smell till weeks of cure. Low odor. Thc content will be fine. Terpene profile can suffer. Just what I find.
Jar or grovebag it. Smoke what gets you by. As the rest cures it will get better and better. I promise. You did not dry the inside and that will rehydrate the outside while in cure.
Lately I have been dry trimming and hanging whole to retain moisture and slow the dry.

As far as smell goes it depends greatly on the individual genetics. I’ve had some very mediocre aroma on frankly most plants I grow. It’s a treat when you get one that actually has a good terpene profile.

This stuff is crazy @dbrn32 . So smelly and sticky just touch it and glue fingers together. Once again I do not know WTF it is. Forgot. Didnt tag. Clones from here out for a while. I will know what they are.

The best terpene profile I’ve run has been Durban Thai/Cindy 99 from Brothers’ Grim. Got the seed from @dbrn32 years ago. I did have a decent Godfather OG that I’m still smoking on.

If the plants dry too quickly you can water them a few hours before cutting them down. That way the stems and leaves will have moisture in them when cut and and won’t dry as quickly.

Have the room temperature around 20C (68F) and humidity around 50%. The warmer the air temperature, the faster they dry.

Don’t trim the leaves before they have had a couple of weeks to dry. If you dry the plant as a single bush, the leaves will help keep the humidity up a bit around the flowers and the plant won’t dry as quickly.

Have a fan oscillating in the room with the drying plants. Don’t aim the fan at the plants, have it blowing air around the room but not directly on the plants.

My plants were dried like this and took 3 weeks to dry and another 4 for curing. I live on the edge of a desert and it’s hot and dry here.


Smell is genetics (as mentioned above). I had 2 plants and one plant (MK ultra) stank from day one. It stank through veg and got terrible during flower. When it was dried, cured and was packed away, it just smelt normal.

The other plant (red cherry strudel) didn’t smell during veg and only had a slight smell during flower. Once it was dried and cured and I was putting it in a jar, it stank worse than the MK ultra. It was in sealed jars in the cupboard and I could smell it on the other side of the house. It smells like a cross between chemicals and a salami sausage and stinks the entire place out.
