So I harvested my blue cheese plants and hung them to dry sadly the plant only produced smaller buds the biggest one was maybe a couple grams of that so they dried fast like in 4 days fast I trimmed the buds and placed them in cure bags but it still has a very strong hay smell what’s up with that
I had this happen on my first grow. I was under the impression it was because of it drying too fast. I have heard that the smell will come back after it’s cured. Mine never did. I hope you have a better turn out than I had.
So the smell never went away?or it did?
For mine it never did smell like anything but hay. That was my first grow. Now I jump through hoops to make sure the temperature and humidity is as close to 60-60 as I can. My current plant that is drying is at 7 days and is still at 19% moisture. I have a few more days to go.
Paper bags sweating, before cure bag (grove Cure bags), slows the cure process for more even dry.
So paper bags now?or I should’ve used paper bags before I trimmed the buds off the stems
Has anyone ever done the fridge drying?I read online if you put the stems in the fridge in paper bags that it’s almost a guaranteed slow and perfect drying process
a 4-day dry is a little too fast…and can lead to a stronger hay smell. keeping the drying conditions as close to 60 F and 60% humidity will slow down the dry. If you are drying too fast, putting the buds in paper bags will slow down the dry some and allow the smaller buds and bigger buds to dry the same.
It is also important to start curing before they get too dry. I like to start curng before the stems start to snap…about 13% moisture if you are using a meter. A good cure will make any bud small and taste better…but the better you control the dry the better the taste will be in the end.
With all that said, I have put very hay smelling weed in a Grove bag and 8 weeks later it smelled really good. my 2 cents.
Good luck!
Ok I’m gonna try that with my last plant I have left to harvest I’m gonna place the buds in paper bags when I start to notice them drying to fast.as far as this current cure process the buds are in grove bags and I have been opening the bag to burp it once or twice a day to try and get rid of that hay smell
This could help. Put your buds in a jar loosely leaving or 4 inches at top. Take a peice of a paper towel fold it into a 1.5 inch square soak it thoroughly with water. Now squeeze every drop of water you can out of it. Tape that to the top of the inside of the lid. Keep the jar sealed tight for 24 hours. Rotate the buds by rolling it around and over every 4 to 6 hours. Don’t cheat and open it to check. After 24 hours open and the buds should be moist. Start curing opening for 10 to 20 minutes every couple hours. For a few days. Then depending on moisture content you can reduce the burping to 3 or 4 times a day.
These are guidelines. Use common sense.
Hope this helps. Also if I have a fresh bud I use that instead of the paper towel.
Grove bags do not need to be burped…you will over dry the weed during the cure. Humidity in the Grove bag should be around 62% temps 68 - 70 f.
Ok copy that this is my first grow so I’m learning as I’m going lol. Any tips on drying this last plant in my closet?I have a small fan in the closet and a RH/temp meter. I thought about getting a humidifier to but idk
Try to get the closet as close to 60f and 60% rh as possible…this is not always easy. I need a humidifier when I dry in the winter here in Ohio.
Keep in the dark
Make sure that air can get in and out of the closet…you need fresh air coming in. OK to have a fan, but low and not directly on the plant/buds.
If you are struggling to keep the rh up, put the buds in grocery bags and they will create a small micro climate in the bags that will have a higher humidity. Open the bags for a few minutes twice a day to let some moisture out.
I slide one grocery bag over another one upside down…when I open them to let out moisture, I just flip it upside down and put the bag that was on the inside on the outside.
I use a moisture meter (cheap on Amazon) to check the moisture level in the buds. I put the in Grove bags around 13% moisture content (using the wood setting)
Can also stick some fan leaves from another plant in to increase moisture.
I do that too. But prefer a little.bud if available.
