How do I..? What's this?

Good day everyone!

Every day, we get some questions about how to use the Forum, or about what a certain icon/switch would do…

So I decided to make a thread where people can ask those questions pertaining to the use of the Forum and how to use certain functions.
Anybody can answer if they know the answer and all relevant questions will be answered as soon as an answer is found.

Great idea @kaptain3d. A thread where folks can ask questions or find answers. Especially great for new users that may need a helping hand to get started.

Let’s start with the reply box.
What are those icon at the top and what do they do?

First Icon: The M↓ / A :

If you are on the M↓, you are in the “Standard Markdown Editor”. Which is the way we’ve always worked with usually… You get the preview pane (or the option for it on the phone)

If you are on the A, you are in the “new Rich Text editor”.
You lose the preview pane or the option for it on the phone. And if there’s anything else missing, I haven’t experienced it yet.

The second “Icon” is the “B” which stands for “Bold”. This will let you highlight the text you want to bring attention to. When you press that icon, you’ll get a line in the reply box, like so, I had to add a few spaces between the asterisks and the text so that the text would show. ** strong text **
Normally it would look like this:

strong text

Just replace the words “strong text” by whatever text you want. Alternatively, you can achieve the same thing by typing 2 asterisks (*) and type your text immediately after and finishing your phrase with another 2 asterisks. There should be no space between the asterisks and the text for any of the functions to work.

The next “Icon”, the I works exactly the same way, but it italicizes your highlighted text.

  • emphasized text *
    emphasized text

The Double Ts Icon is to make some kind of title to your post. The four different options will give you different size for that title as shown below. Just replace the word “Heading” to whatever title you want, type enter, then type in your reply as you would normally.

Heading

The “Chain links” icon will let you create a link to a different topic or post a link. If you enter a “link text”, the link will appear as that text highlighted in blue as in the following exemple:

Need a refreshing break?

The following icon “Quotation marks” will let you highlight a specific part of text that you choose or type yourself.

To use it, just click and drag on the text you want to highlight, or type in some text to replace the word “blockquote”. (this also work for the “italicize” function.

Blockquote

The next function is the “preformatted text” option. This one I don’t know much about either. But it would be useful for website builder/designer and programmer..

type or paste code here

Following that is the “upload” icon.
That one is pretty straightforward. It will open a file exploring windows that will let you pick and chose a location for the file you wish to upload. In our case, an image or picture.

The next 2 icons are for making lists. The first one will be a bulleted list and the second one will be a numbered list. As usual, just press the icon and replace the text with whatever you want listed. Press enter after each item on your list. You don’t need to press the list icon for every items. After your last item is listed, just backspace to the very beginning of the next line and you’ll be able to type on as usual.

  • example 1
  • example 1a
  1. example 2
  2. example 2a

The following icon let’s you post an emoji that you can pick from a list.

And finally, the last icon (+) will give you a bunch of different options that will enrich your reply.
You could insert a table, the date and time, add footnotes, build a poll or blur some words to create a “blur spoiler”.

That’s enough for me for now.
I hope some of you find this useful and if you have any other questions, feel free to ask them and hopefully someone with an answer will reply soon!

Have a fantastic day Legends. :peace_symbol: :love_you_gesture:

Good one @ScottsBuds ! :+1:

For the purpose of this journal, I’ll assume they mean : How to create a journal

First you need to decide on a “Category” of journal and then a sub-category can then be assigned to further pinpoint what the journal will be about.

First start by clicking the “category” of any journal you happen to be on. That wil take you to the “new journal” section.

In this particular example, it takes me to the “Members Lounge” new journal section. Just click on the “Members Lounge” box and a drop down menu will appear with many different categories.

Pick your chosen category. That will bring you to that category “new journal” page.
Next you can assign (optional) a subcategory. That will just clarify what your journal is all about. Same thing as the first box, when you click it, a drop down menu will list the different subcategories available.

It’s easier to ignore the “tags” option for now. You’ll see it again when you start the first post of your new topic.

You’re now ready to create your topic. To do so, just click the “new topic” button at the top right of your window.

Now type an appropriate title in the relevant box, pick or create an optional tag, if you feel like it, by clicking the + arrow in the “tags” box.

Type in your text in the reply box, update pictures if you want.

Optional information: There’s 2 ways you can reply to a post/topic.

1:
If you want to respond/answer a reply you’ve just read, just click on the “reply” function at the bottom of the reply you wish to answer. This will reply to this user directly by tagging them in the reply (in the upper right corner of the reply window) and place the reply at the end of the journal, even if you’re replying to a 4 years old comment.
In the following example, you can see that @ScottsBuds replied to an earlier post from @Olaf.ILGM .

2:
Simply click on the big “reply” button at the end of the journal. This will place your comment at the bottom of the page and won’t be tagging anyone in particular.

And Voilà! You’ve created your first journal.

How do I turn on my new TV, it doesn’t have an on/off switch. I hate being old. I can’t even work out a TV anymore :frowning:

I understand your plight. A lot of them have the power buttons on bottom these days. Sometimes oddly placed on the back as well. Good work Kap. You’re very thoughtful.
