Check @Covertgrower 's extraction journal. You might find it very interesting :thinking: :wink: :nerd_face:

Did a little research. Open loop would be the guy that soaks weed in a pot. Takes weed out and reduces the alcohol over low heat on the stove.

Open loop would be your typical still set up. There is a vessel for holding the it Everclear/THC solution which is heated and held under vacuum which makes the ethanol vaporize. Ethanol is cooled in such a way that it is collected in a different vessel, leaving the concentrate. At no time should the alcohol be exposed to the atmosphere.

These are most of the internal components of my system. Front and center is the base with vacuum port, bottom gasket, and post for the crucible. Behind the base is the crucible which contains the wash to be reduced. to the left is the seal for the cylinder.

Jar on right contains the filtered wash. Now you can see the cylinder, it is like a tall, flat-walled bundt pan in shape.
When activated, the base creates a vacuum and gently heats the crucible, which has been screwed to the post on the base. Evaporating ethanol rises and condenses on the lid/top seal due to bowl of ice. Lid is sloped and condensed ethanol falls into “bundt pan”

Ok, so this where I am at

Concentrate is the consistency of thick molasses. Lost a bit of Everclear when we were transferring back to bottle. The loss during processing was minimal, I feel.
@Caligurl @AfgVet @TransplantedFarmgirl @JaneQP
Should concentrate be reduced more or am I good for edibles at this stage?

I let mine sit on a silicon mat a few days at that consistency . There is still small amounts of alcohol left, it will purge on the mat. I then use a dab tool and either put it in a small silicon or glass dab type container. At times I freeze it a it a bit to handle it easier. I drop about a gram in a melted stick of butter in a double boiler, heat a bit, stir then into Tupperware or a mold. A clean wash and filter, leaves very little weed taste in the butter.

I am guessing the weed was decarbd, if not you will need to decarb the wax for edibles. Sometimes I don’t decarb and use the wax as a bowl topper or into a dab rig, if I did a pretty clean wash. There is a rabbit hole of info about next steps to creating shatter and other popular concentrates. They all start with cold temps and quick washes.

It was indeed decarbed. I only used a half oz. Both washes were combined. I made a small error with the first wash, when I forgot to strain bud before the buchner funnel. I filtered twice and all was good. The concentrate is intended for edibles, though I may try dab in the vape. I have the concentrate in the pictured silicon dish, there is a second dish that I am using as a lid, both are on my tent with two carbon filters creating a vortex of air to accelerate drying.

You will be able to use it now, but I also let mine sit to air for a while. Looks good friend :+1:

Source turbo is on my wish list, along with a bigger tent, another light, more seeds, new fan, humidifier, heater……well, you get the idea :rofl::sunglasses:

What is the best way to finish the purge? Open air? Covered?

I purge mine down to a pull/snap consistency. If I take it off sooner, I let it evap more on the silicon mat before putting into container for storage or making edibles.

I have the Source… now I want the Etoh so I can process way moer at a time!

When I tried the dry ice at first, I couldn’t really tell but I think I did it wrong! Now, i get WAY more really clean concentrate on the first run. I get so much off of the 1st run, I almost can’t justify doing a 2nd wash!

I find that when I do that, its more susceptible to ‘bumping’ which will make the recovered alcohol contaminated and turn a little green.
