Any input would be helpful. Ive had a few harvest and i cant seem to obtain the desired aroma from my finished product. Ive had different strains but all seem to have the same final smell… not hay but more or less smell like mid grade just not that banging skunk smell… they smell amazing at harvest so its gotta be something im doing during the curing process… i have a dry tent stays right around 60° 55-60% rh with good air circulation. Dark dark no light. Let them hang till the stems are barely snappy(around 9 days). Go into jars with hydrometers and burp them 3 times a day for the first wk-wk1/2 then monitor the jars to keep around 62% kept in a box burping daily… just cant figure it out again any input would be appreciated all that work then finished product is meh…
Chlorophyll is responsible for the “hay” smell. It can take several weeks to gas off all the chlorophyll during the cure.
It doesnt have a hay smell just has just a mild classic weed smell… and i juat want to say this for the forum midwest guy. You are alway super responsive and the community really appreciates it
Thanks for the feedback. I enjoy watching newer growers be successful.
Give it a couple of months to achieve the ideal aroma. It should continue to improve. Let time do its thing.
Ok maybe just need a longer cure… my last one was only about a month guess 2-3month is more ideal
You are going the right direction if you no longer have the hay smell.
Frankly, a lot of this is genetics. I know exactly what you are describing as i deal with the same issues.
There are a few things you could do during the grow, like making sulfur available during flower.
Really don’t see that you are doing anything to cause your issue. I cherish the stinky phenos and give away (or use for oil) the rest.
Yea im pretty meticulous with my grow monitoring ph, run off and checking the tricomes for harvest… never harvesting early… im pretty patient because this is not a source of income just a hobby and i want to be good at it… but when ive had numerous different seeds from ilgm i feel like the aroma should be different at some point
I’ve grown 4 strains from ILGM beans and the super skunk was the best smoke of the 4, but no aroma like I thought it was going to be. It was disappointing but if I put some in a baggie and put it in my car the aroma is everywhere. My wife says she can smell it at the front door and that’s with a carbon 8” filter. I can’t. I tried terpenes designed for flower and it was pretty good
This probably has a lot to do with it. Going “nose blind” is a real thing. Being in close contact as often as we are while growing, we just don’t register that smell. I have also noticed a lack of strong odor from any of the weed I have grown. It is always very good quality, just don’t notice the smell.
That too…it’s weird. ![]()
Sometimes I think too ,that people get dispo weed ,or weed grown and then sprayed for aroma and then compare their home grows to that like it’s less desirable ,
I have also experienced the mid grade normal
Classic smell .
However when I let anyone else smell it their eyes light up so I think part of this too is nose blind being around it so much ,
I know this much ,my homegrown is always terpy ,much more than the dispo weed ,and it also gets me ripped every time
Your drying / curing environment seems very similar to mine ,
I’m still in the process of deciding which is the way inwant to go ,grove bags or jars ,at the moment I’m not noticing any real difference as I’m using both to experiment on the same weed.
Only thing different I do is “sweat” my buds after trimming and before bagging or jarring,I believe it does wick moisture out from the center of the flowers to redistribute .
I’m also in agreement with you about @MidwestGuy ,he is super knowledgeable and always helping anyone he can ,and I’m in agreement with him that the longer cure the better
I’ve had some curing for 6/8 months or longer and it’s truly fire
I was in utter shock to learn this, at my first harvest in 2022.
Didn’t plan on jar storage for four months, then smoke.
I dry slow and cure long, I hope.
Same to you @BoatGrower .
Longer before harvest? Trichomes color?
Learning new, too.
Good cure to you.
@Lacewing , yes to the bag sweating.
I wash, hang for a while then paper bag sweat, then jar.
small Fan while hanging, RH sensors in bag and jar ( or grove bags).
Gallon glass jars too.
*currently drowning" the hoard of invaders and chemicals.
Pure Crop 1 may have helped, too.
