Some strains of cannabis have been bred - by humans and/or mother nature - to form buds where foxtailing is the norm. When you’re growing a strain that is genetically predisposed to foxtail, the whole bud joins in on the foxtailing action. This makes it so that genetic foxtailing looks more uniform than the other type of foxtailing we’ll review in a minute.Dr. Grinspoon is a weird-looking form of foxtailing, but it makes good cannabis!

The picture to the right is a strain called ‘Dr. Grinspoon’ (named for the esteemed cannabis activist, Dr. Lester Grinspoon). The look of this plant could be considered another manifestation of genetic foxtailing, and it’s important to note that this action happens everywhere on the plant.

Good or Bad? In short, there’s nothing wrong with genetic foxtailing. The fact that it’s genetic means that it was going to do it regardless of whatever specific growing technique is being used. These strains are also capable of containing high amounts of THC, so it doesn’t seem that genetic foxtailing reduces the potency of the plant.

This type of foxtailing is the good type. Again, that only means that it’s good by comparison to bad foxtailing in that it doesn’t cause any negative effects.

Heat/Light Stress
The second cause of foxtailing is environmental and it’s usually cause by your lights. If you’ve ever parked a high-powered HPS or LED light (CFLs and T5s aren’t usually strong enough) too close to your cannabis, you might see it grow these odd spires.

A almost pleasant looking, but definitely bad manifestation of foxtails…

A strong foxtail spire caused by light stress!

The fact that the foxtails only seem to appear at the top means this is a bad thing…

Good or Bad? Bad! This type of foxtailing is a sign that your buds are getting too much light and/or too much heat! These odd spires can also be accompanied by light bleaching and cooked leaves. Any one of these three signs is a message that your lights need to be backed off immediately to stave off any further damage. Although light bleaching and burned leaves are obviously damaged, foxtails don’t look damaged so much as they just look weird so they don’t seem to be a threat. Unfortunately they’re the harbingers of heat damage which means lost potency; if you see this type of foxtails on your buds, you’ve likely already lost potency to heat and now it’s a race to lose as little as you possibly can.

Luckily, this type of foxtailing is normally localized, so you’ll only see it in spot where light intensity is super-high. This usually means they’ll be found in a small circle directly under the light, but that small circle gets larger as the light gets closer.

Now with all that being said, plants are weird! It’s totally possible that many of you growers have already seen a plant that makes the ‘bad’ looking foxtails but all over the plant. Or maybe a plant that only grows in spires! The point is that there is bound to be plants that breaks these rules, but at least until then you’ll know what you’re dealing with. Good luck and happy growing!

Have to pick up on it tomorrow! Gonna burn one and git ta bed!

@Gilly I hope that explains the fox tailing but honestly you might just have a very strong plant with THC but that article pretty much explains it about fox tailing , but like I said every plant fox tails which is called calyxes and they stack up during flower , some show different than others due to growing lights , temperatures or techniques or nutrients even , but no harm in quality , it’s just how the calyxes stack up in your buds cause of its enironment ?

Every bud on every plant has 1 except for 1 kinda deformed looking bud and it has 2 !

On closer inspection these “Foxtails” are all over the bud on every bud!!! NOT just on top!

Yes we can!

Can you post a pic?

We can’t really describe if they’re good or not without seeing.

I’ll try. I’ve decided ta go ahead and start the harvest. The Trichomes are exactly the way I want them! Remember about 4-5 weeks ago I had ta cut 3 stems cause they were dy’in! Well I dried and cured the stuff and I’ll tell ya what, the stuff is absolutely kick ass! (and that was 4-5 weeks ago!) Can’t wait ta try out the most recent buds! Other than some “Mr. Nice Guy” I had a while back this is by far the best smoke I’ve had in a long, long time! When I can smoke 3-4 times a day and get the same buzz the 4th time around as I did the 1st then it’s damn good weed! I have always bought from my best buddy for decades now and this is what was lacking, inconsistency! But when you buy like that it’s a crap shoot every time. (even though he always tried his best ta get the best) I’ll get a pic or 2 up that shows the “Foxtails”! It’s actually pretty cool look’in! Every 1 of them are covered in Trichomes just like the rest of the bud!!!

10 - 4!!! Hmmmmmm!

I brought back seeds from Jamaica and started them inside in April. I ended up with 2 female plants that are 2 different strains. One has a purple stock and purple in the buds the other looks more common. It is now mid October here in Ontario, the plants are not showing signs of yellowing yet and are green as can be. Temperatures are getting cold at night.

Any advise for me please? 4 weeks in veg

Yoshi I think your spot on in some factors effecting fox tails .I have 4 autos in flower at this time. One has been fox tailing from the beginning of flower. The other 3 seem to be taking on that trait as they progress. They are Sativa dominate so lm hoping this won’t be to detrimental to the quality of my end product. And thanks for all your input on this subject.

Two plants same pot?
