I think I started more around 32", but the plants grew up. I’m thinking I should bring the lights up a bit. What say you?

A customer has a question and I hope we can get some opinions on it, thanks.

I just found info at http://www.viparspectra.com/goods.php?id=59 which says:
Vegetative Coverage at 32": 3x3ft
Flowering Coverage at 22": 2.5x2.5ft

I think I started more around 32", but the plants grew up. I’m thinking I should bring the lights up a bit. What say you?

Can you post a picture of the plant under your light ?
Most growers with leds will keep lights between 12-18 inches above the canopy

Usually when the plants grow you lower the light, so they receive more light. I would lower it to within 24-20".
What makes you want to raise the light?

However, if they are getting tall and getting closer to the light you can either raise the light to the recommended height - or train the plant to keep it at a certain height if you are running out of room to raise the light.

Wouldn’t it depend on how powerful the LED light is?

Yes of course it would
Which is why i posted the range i did @trgrows
In most case starting with MFG recommendations is best and if plants stretch to much lower the fixture

The 600 watt fixture you have is a decent light
And others here us them
18 inches or so is a good hieght off canopy with that light

As the plants grow, they are getting closer to the lights, so why would I lower them?

Youd lower them to prevent the plants from streaching to much if you keep raising them the plants in veg will keep trying to reach them
Youll need to find the sweet spot where your plants get plenty of light and dont streach out to much

You would just keep them within 24-20" until around flower. As your plants grow you will have to raise your light to keep it in that distance.

Here’s some more details:

I have just built a 4’ x 6’ x 7’ tall grow tent, which will house 6 plants, each with 2’x2’ of space. This is my first attempt, and I’m trying to keep the costs within reason, and the lighting can get expensive.

I’ve got two clones that are around 12” tall (Girl Scout Cookie, and Pineapple Express), and from seed, I have three pots of True OG that are 3-4” tall, and one Pennywise which is just getting started at 2.5” tall.

I use blocks to adjust everything so the canopy is consistently about 30” from the light which is in veg mode.

Right now, everything is in the corner with one VIPARSPECTRA 600W Full Spectrum LED Grow Light (ebaydotcom/itm/302761674426). The ViperSpectra instructions say to set the light at 32” for veg coverage, and then 22” for flowering.
https://www.amazon.com/VIPARSPECTRA-Reflector-V600-Spectrum-Indoor/dp/B019ETLC7M?tag=greenrel-20

When everything gets larger, I will move the 600W LED to the center, and then will have four 150W UFO LED Full Spectrum Grow Lights (ebay dot com/itm/323322613731) fill in the corners.

The clones have been FIM’d once and are starting to sprout new leaders. The clones are about the right height to start SCROGing, so tomorrow I will construct screens that will sit about 12” above each of the pots. I’ll then start super cropping them (Super Cropping Marijuana: Simple Secret to Bigger Yields | Grow Weed Easy).

I’m building the screens myself out of 1x2 pine, and will stretch braided masons line into a grid of 25 squares. I hope to end up with 25 koalas per plant :sunglasses:

Thanks to all for your advise on the lighting, and any other tidbits you care to share. Here are some photos.

Here are the 6 all in the corner:

This is the Pineapple Express clone:

This is the Girl Scout Cookie clone:

This is my grow tent. When I took this photo, I had to keep the zippered door open because I have a 400 cfm fan exhausting the oxygen from the tent (set at about half that with a rheostat) I now have a 14"x14" Filtrete MPR 1500 Healthy Living Ultra Allergen Reduction AC Furnace Air Filter built into the tent so the door is now all the way down, and the air goes through the filter. It creates a nice seal against the threshold at the bottom of the doorway.

Here’s the fan setup, before I put in the ceiling which is white plastic, same as on the walls.

Here’s a view the ceiling with the 6" exhaust pipe sticking through:

This one shows my new filter setup in the corner. The piece of plywood hanging in front of it will soon be moved:

Here’s the filter from the outside:

And a view window that I installed so I don’t have to open the door:

@trgrows I have 3 of the Vipar Spectra 600( 267W at wall) reflector series and I had stretching using their recommendations . I try to stay somewhere between 17 and 22 in. from top of plant or canopy, seems to work pretty good for me. I should also say I keep room temp 75 to 81 F.

Blockquote I try to stay somewhere between 17 and 22 in. from top of plant or canopy

Is that for flowering? As the instructions say to “set the light at 32” for veg coverage, and then 22” for flowering.”

Pretty much the whole grow, except the first 2 weeks seemed to work well, but I also kept the temps in check. I noticed no light burn and ran both veg and bloom all the way except when seedlings, this grow in a scrog.

I decided that my original plan was not good, and have returned all the lights. BTW, of the 4 UFO lights I bought, 3 were defective. I was not pleased with the PAR ratings of the VIPARSPECTRA Reflector Series V600 LED Grow Light which erode quickly as you get away from the center. Plus I decided that I needed more powerful lighting. I’ve gone to all this trouble, why have wimpy lights?

I decided to open a new topic as this one is a mile long. It’s at Setting up one light with a light mover

Thanks for your input!

ILGM seeds? I’ve had issues with seedling stage as well, but once they get going they take off.

Yes Chronic Widow fems from ILGM. had one hit 50 inches with not much spacing on the Nodes in 49 days.
