Have several vac packs of frozen rough trimmed buds. And suggestions on decarb for infusions? Decarbed a batch of fresh 45 minutes at 240, 5 minutes more than usual. Infusion came out really harsh, even burns the throat a little. Supposed to be 20% CBD, 5% THC. Getting some pain relief but not much sleep aid.
Saw an article suggesting drying the frozen at 150-200, then normal decarb, another said just decarb lower temp, longer time. Kinda vague. Thinking maybe an hour at 220.
Ideas?
I always decarb at 250 for exactly 30min. Also, I put a bbq grill thermometer inside the oven to verify temp is actually 250. Not 300 when set at 250. If you haven’t tested your actual oven temperature it may be running way hotter than where it’s set
Ok, weirdly worded question. Are your buds frozen? Or are they in an airtight bag in the freezer? When I freeze for decarbing, I dry the buds until they are extra crispy.
Add/edit… Dryer buds go pretty much straight to decarbing. Moisture still left has to evaporate making it a little slower. Total bro science, my own experience, which is pretty limited.
Were they frozen immediately after harvest or trimmed /dried/cured then frozen? If they were already dried/cured I would let them sit at room temp for a while then decarb normally (240 about an hour). If you prefer when making FECO/rso you can decarb the oil after the extraction, many prefer this method. If it were frozen after harvest with no dry, I am not sure, people normally freeze after harvest for making bubble hash.
Vacuum sealed after a quick trim within an hour of harvest.
Quick trim, vac sealed, into -5 freezer within an hour of harvest. What I’m wondering is how much extra decarb time to drive off the moisture, or dry first, then decarb.
I would take it out the freezer and let it thaw first, I have put it straight in the oven from out the freezer before and it was horrible. I do 240° for 40 minutes, sometimes 45 minutes. When I took it out it was still wet after my 40 minutes and I had dry mixed in there with it
40 minutes at 240 is my usual for dry buds. Kinda leaning towards drying at lower temp first, then decarb.
You’re going to have to dry it before you can decarb or it’s going to steam itself, not good. You may be able to spread it out on one of those mesh drying racks, but as @Borderryan22 said, it should be crispy when it goes in oven.![]()

So watcha think of drying at 150-200, then finely crumble and my usual decarb at 240? So many different articles out there. Aargh!
I would just dump it out and let it dry from the air maybe even have a fan pointed at it and then do your regular d carb
That could work in our climate, even without the fan. Dry. We even have to water our compost, otherwise it mummifies instead of decomposing.
Gracias.
I take mine out of the freezer and put it on the kitchen counter overnight. Next day it goes in my outdoor smoker at 225 for 60 minutes. Obviously, no smoke or wood chips, or filled drip tray. Just dry heat. Keeps the smell out of the house, plus I have a Bluetooth 4-probe thermometer. I put 1 probe on each shelf to keep tabs on it. Never had a problem. Just did over a pound of trimmings, super easy. Definitely thaw first.
Are your buds frozen fresh or dry? These buds were frozen fresh and are really sticky. Spread out on parchment overnight, still pretty soggy in AM. Dried about an hour at 150-200, then crumbled and decarbed at 240. Made infusion, weak. I’ll try your suggestion, thinking maybe chop up the buds; some are pretty big even after shrink wrap. One more big plant to harvest next couple days. Will just hang up to dry.
Mine was fresh frozen. Then just a defrost, parchment paper on baking sheets, and then put into the smoker. (digital control for the heat, 60 minutes at 225) Worked great. Hope it works out for you. Let us know, always like to help.
I’ll try it. What are you making after decarb? I’m making oil infusion. But this grow leaves a long lingering weed flavor. Wondering if it’s the strain or the processing green.
Hey @ElMimbreno , I too am doing oil infusion. Bought a couple of 32oz MCT Coconut oil (Solima brand) from Amazon. I also just purchased a 3-in-1 decarb/infuser/gummy machine from there too. Taking my first try at making my own gummies. But I ate about 1/4 gram of the decarb weed, definitely got high, then tried a small amount of the infused oil, high again. So the process works. I can only decarb 30 grams of weed at a time, so if your trying to do a bunch, it’s not very time effective. That said, decarbed 30 grams, added 2 cups of the MCT Coconut oil and a couple of hours later, I had infused oil, all in one machine, all automatic. Kinda sweet. Trying gummies, made 2 batches, have to dial in the recipe.
Nice. My goal is pain relief and better sleep. High CBD, low ( apx 5%) THC works better than Tylenol or ibuprofen.
Have been using corn oil, but going to try avocado. Someone suggested better compatibility with cannabis and better digestibility. Have been avoiding MCT based on possible diarrhea. Nuf o dat shit already.
It’s my understanding that vegetable oils do not combine well with the cannabis. Avacado is supposed to be better than vegetable oil, but the coconut is better and the MCT Coconut is supposed to be the best at absorption. I personally have not run a test, just from trusted sources. I’ve now had just the oil by itself in a small dropper and have eaten about 10 gummies so far made with the MCT oil. No diarrhea effects so far. But definitely got high. Still have to dial in the gummy recipe, the one that came with the machine doesn’t seem to be very good. Hope that helps. Good luck.
@Darran that is what I use for my oil, MCT. I don’t have an infuser I do mine in a mason jar and a crock pot. I’ll put about an ounce to 1 cup of MCT or even less MCT if I can get the flower covered up in the Mason jar. Normally after my flower is the decarbed and everything I usually make a batch of regular coconut oil to make some cookies with. So I usually end up with about 20 g in each mason jar so if I got 20 g in my jar I’ll usually put about a half a cup to 3/4 of a cup of MCT. I let it sit in the Crock-Pot for 4 hours and turn it off for 8 hours and let it go again for another 4 hours trying to get it really strong you know
