Finish attic space or buy a portable shed

I am trying to work on my new grow space, and am having a tough time deciding which route would be better long term. Please share any and all input you can on the pros and cons to either type grow setup. Either way im trying to carve out roughly 175 to 200 sqft of space to dedicate to my hobbies.

My attic space probably has a solid 8 by 24 ft area that could be finished in, with fresh air vents already existing on either end of the space.

The sheds i have been looking into are from 10 by 16 to 12 by 20.

Hello. I use my 10x16 shed as my lung room. Tent is inside of course.

I have it fully insulated and plywood over the insulation. Window AC unit and a free standing AC unit as a backup (in the Deep South along the coast).

My setup works great but I do wish it was in the house instead. That way I could check it a little easier.

Not sure how easy it will be to insulate and condition your attic? Also, how convenient is the access? Pull down steps would get old quick going up once a day (or more).

Good points. Easy access, discretion, and costs are all good factors to write out on apaper and decide…
@TeNNWisKeY What is the budget you are looking to invest? What are your neighbors like? Do they present a problem if the grow is outside the house and more easily accessible for nefariousness? Is it cheaper to finish an attic (which could eventually be used for something more if hneeded) or devote the money to a detached system with increased security?
I had a greenhouse, built it myself, used good materials, polycarbonate walls, and sophisticated passive air filtration for smell control and one storm later it was all gone and I had to move the plants back inside. Lost about $400 on that adventure, but gained a lot of experience. What problems does nature present?

My biggest concern is not smelling up my whole house. So containing the smell is the most important. And i dont know if i can keep it from stinking up the rrst of my house if its in my attic. Budget is definitely gonne have to cap out at about $10,000 thoigh.

Hello Growmie I have my tent in my walk in attic its a 6x8. Lung room is attic, im able to maintain 5-10 difference. I was in a bedroom which was nice using the ac and heat. Anyway I have just started my 3rd yr inside growing. Sitting here listening my inkbird is set at 84 exhaust fans 2-12" comes on at 86 runs for 30/45 seconds and temps down. 84 seems to be the magic number, but

cooler days I open the tent to get more input from lung room. Almost 10 degrees different on days like that. Attic is 78, tent is 84
I like being inside also

@Bunger64 How hard is it to contain the smell with the doors open. My biggest concern is smelling up my house. And my wife hate hate hates the smell of pot.

Well the attic still contains the smell petty good once you enter the staircase you get an aroma but not anything solid. I think that if the mrs doesn’t like the smell its not gonna matter where you put it. I like the house because I would have a beaten path to the building by now and I also use it as a man cave Gnome home.

Wife hates the smell - I’m in the same boat. For that reason I’ll never be growing in the house. Backyard and garage only for me.

Its a tough row to hoe for damn sure. The space above my garage has a fresh air vent on either end. My thinking is if i seal this space off. And filter the air before dumping it outside should keep any smell out of the living in portion of the house. Plus absolutely no mixing of the ventilation systems. The grow would be completely cut off from any heat or ac and have its own system inside the lung portion of the room.

Not sure who your trying to sell this to brother but I completely understand lol. When my neighbors want to know why they still smell outside if they are gone lol. Its all good brother

Smell outside doesnt concern my so much. I smoke on my back deck, neighbors dont seem to say anything.

Sounds like attic is good choice then. Always nice to be able to visit them often and easily instead of going outside. Im assuming your attic will be a lower cost to maintain environment than a stand-alone shed.

Access to water and electricity equally available? HVAC can use a lot of energy.

Cost to operate will probably be about the same either place. Initially the portable shed seemed like the obvious choice. But will cost more to setup. The attic space could be done for about just the cost of the shed alone.

Shed

  1. For the sheer simplicity of walking in at ground level it also serves as a man cave away from whoever.

2 Fires. Beats burning ya house down.

  1. Bugs. Who wants a house full of spider mites dropping out of the attic, through the roof and onto your face while your asleep? Not me.

  2. Hot attics on snowy days attract Helicopters, or at least they use too.

  3. You can fence a shed , put a dog inside fence and not have to worry about somebody’s visiting kid climbing into your attic.

  4. A new shed would be easy to wire, ventilate and plumb.

  5. Smell Weed has a way of stinking up the house

Just my two cents

Ain’t no thumb like a green thumb baby

Peace, I’m out

I believe the attic grow was officially vetoed by the Mrs :100:. Looks like i better get to shed shopping.

@TeNNWisKeY If you’re in Tennessee as I am I would go the shed route. I tried in my attic but with the heat and humidity it’s damn near impossible to keep temps and humidity in check. I bought a 12’x16’ shed insulated it and 1/2 plywood use half as my growing area and the other as my man cave. Let me know if you have any questions.

Ive been pit looking at sheds today. Definitely think a 10 by 16 or 12 by 16 is well enough for my man/grow cave
