Buds loosing after harvest

Harvested 6 Os from a GSC auto that had big, dense colas, hung it for 10 days, avg temp was 65 @ 55-60% RH.

After I trimmed the bud off the branches and put in mason jars for curing, all the bud loosened up.

  1. Why would it go from being dense flowers to fluff?
  2. Is there a way to fix it?

I’d hate to have to feed it to the compost pile… it smells amazing.

Buds contain a high percentage of water at harvest. Expect shrinkage when dried. It’s normal.

It kind of is what it is. Usually buds get denser as they compact and dry. What kind of lighting were you using, and we’re they autos?

Idk why you would toss it if it smells amazing? We used to smoke moldy brick weed back in the day that was full of seeds. Lol.

No way to fix it. You’ll just have to burn it. Lol.
But seriously I’ve had a few that way and they smoke just fine. It varies by strain I suppose. Think of the quote on many items in the grocery, “sold by weight, not volume”.
I hooked up with an ounce of Tangerine Kush in the Denver Craigslist that was delivered in a gallon ziploc bag and filled half of it. All bud, all fluffy and some of the best I’ve ever smoked.
Enjoy!

They did not get more dense as they got put into jars for curing, they turned into soft cotton balls so to speak. They’re not bone dry but are kind of falling apart when I handle them. They’re sitting at 60% RH in the jars.

Yeah, I remember the 80s and 90s dirt weed that gave ya a migraine  sure dont miss that mess.

It was under the Vivosun 100W with the built in fan, the model # escapes me. I let this GSC auto go an extra week so it would be on the same hang schedule as two others that needed the week to finish up. I expect the GSC auto to be a couch locker since I let it ride for an extra week.

They sound delicious :sunglasses:

That could be the issue. Most 100w fixtures are good for 1 plant in a 1.5x1.5-2x2 space.

Sounds like you had 3? Density comes from light intensity. Sounds like you may have under lit them. Which would explain the results.

Each plant was centered under their own light. 3 plants, 3 lights, in a 4x2.

Flwr:
Week 1 through 4 at 75% intensity.
Week 5 through 9 at 100% intensity.

The GSC auto gave up 6 Os after trimming and was 38" tall. I was proud of her growth. She the one in this photo…

The other 2 plants only produced 2 Os each and only got about 22" tall (Do-si-dos auto). I’ll never grow this one again. Very bushy, thin, frail branches, small flowers, and smelled like shit. Kind of remined me of the way bud rot smells but there was no rot or mold on either of them. Wasn’t impressed with the DSD.

I see. Were you going off of recommended heights from factory?

Based on the image there I found the light and here is the ppfd map per light at 12” (provided from factory) at 100% power. Per light would provide overlap which would be beneficial if they were all the same height.

It’s recommended to have at least 700 ppfd to 1000 ppfd at the canopy.

Judging by this picture that is that 1.5x1.5 space I referenced above. The grid they used doesn’t make sense usually it’s 6” increments… they used 4-13/16” increments. Totally bizarre… anyway- would take 4 of these to handle a 2x4 space appropriately.

Cool looking lights though.

Edit
Shame with the dosi that’s been on my list for years… good to know.

Yeah, I floated the lights 12 to 18" above. Some days seemed a little much on the ladies so I raised the lights to 18"… if they were praying hard, I would lower it to 12.

I’m not really impressed with vivosun products in general. The tent arrived with pin holes everywhere, the zippers are trash, the whole thing was sew together crooked, the inline vent fan was broken, and their customer service was horrible. I sent them photos and a video of all the issues and it took them over a month to partially refund my $. So I bought a AC Infinity inline fan insteady of another junk Vivosun fan.

The smaller foot print of these lights are nice in that each plant can have their own dedicated light that can be height adjusted for each plant, and the built in fan is nice for circulation when set to breeze mode (10 mins on/ 10 mins off). Next grow I’m going to get a AC Infinity tent and light. I hear their stuff is better quality.

Intensity and light design is everything. Ac is great but there are better options for the money. Unless you are looking at their EVO lights. Supposed to be pretty boss. Take a gander at my light thread for some references. For me it’s always about coverage. :call_me_hand:t3:

Vivosun has always seemed a little hit and miss, wasn’t it them who had malfunctioning units causing house fires everywhere? I can’t remember.

If you want guaranteed quick customer service HLG is kinda the company for that. I’ve heard mixed reviews on AC

A buddy also grew the DSD with a different setup (way better than my rookie setup) and he had the same results. We both fed the DSD to our respective compost piles.

I see photos of it on seedbank sites and it looked impressive… just didn’t deliver in real life for either me or my buddy… and I wasn’t gonna smoke anything that smelled like bud rot (regardless that there was none).

Were they autos as well? I’ve trashed the only autos I ever grew from ILGM because of the smell and taste. Density was there but the other aspects were terrible. Then I see people here growing gg with great smelling and tasting buds. Lol.

Yup. We both had auto DSD… from ILGM :eyes::rofl::rofl::rofl:

I’m checking out your light fixture post now. Thanks growmie!

I would suspect it’s a combination of autoflower and not enough light. I did a Do Si Do last year (photo) and was happy with the result. Dense flower and an okay terpene profile.
