Let's Talk About Drying Buds!

Something I’ve wondered about but doesn’t get talked about is: What will cause buds to be “fluffy” / “hard” after drying and curing? I’ve bought a shitload of weed over the past 43 years and have had plenty of both!!! Just often wondered!?

Your thoughts???

Light has big impact on density of buds, no idea about moistures during drying though.

day for 3-7 day’s - till you hear a “snap” when breaking a stem, yes you can touch the buds to see if they are “crispy” whatever - when you put in jars for curing they will get “wet” again (because of the gases released in the curing process) cure for at least 15 day’s- but 1 + months the norm

I think I read somewhere that indica and sativa have different kind of buds. So it must be genetic. I also heard that More light = harder, thicker, denser buds.

Heat can make a big difference in bud shape size and density. Too much heat can make the buds “foxtail”. This makes them stay open more and keep the veg stuff further inside the bud. Too cold can promote mold but cooler temps make the buds stay close knit and produce more resin to protect the seeds from the cold.

Yes heat stress can happen with increased amount of light. So Bergman says to “keep the air moving between the lights and plants with fans”

yea ! heat and air circulation is very important agree

I think you missed my point bud!

OK, let me ask this then, what do I need to do so I end up with some nice firm buds??? Not too hard and not too soft!!!

More light or more dark?
What temp should I dry at?
What should humidity be?
I know air should be moving.
Anything else?

I need this info ASAP as harvest is getting close and I don’t wanna !@#$ it up!!!

Hey Buddy…how about this:

At harvest-time all you have to do is cut the plant as low as possible and hang the whole thing upside down to dry on a line. The room you use to dry should be the about the same size you grew in (if not the same room). The humidity should remain a constant 50-60%. Too high and buds will mold, too low and they dry too fast and taste bad. Temperature should be around 65-68 degrees, wherever possible. Make sure the room is dark, as light degrades THC. Make sure you hang the plants so that they do not touch each other (invites mold). With constant temp and humidity, the plants should be ready for manicuring in 3-4 weeks. At this time trim colas from the main stalk, and trim large and medium fan leaves (save them for making hash), leaving most of the smaller leaves sticking out of the bud in tact. Hang them up again and for a day or two, until ‘popcorn’ dry. The stems should snap when you bend them, and the bud should be dry, but not brittle.

-Curing hasn’t got a huge effect on bud density, it’s hard to screw it up so I wouldn’t panic man. The way the buds are grown mostly decides their density.

Sooooooo…What ur saying is the shit is gonna dry the way it’s gonna dry! I guess as long as they are covered in trichomes, it doesn’t matter if they dry hard or if they dry a bit spongy ur still gonna get ripped either way huh?! I just want the best result for the conditions I have to work with! Humidity is about 50 - 55% but best I can do on temp is 75* Hope this will work cause it’s the best I can do!!!

Yeah mate thats fine, sure to post some pick of your buds when you cut em!

Roger that!

For the best results I would look into good bud food and a fattening agent like molasses.

Keep the temps in the room no higher than say 80 deg in the day and down to about 65 deg at night. The cooler temps help produce mor resin and compact buds.

Light needs to be correct for budding obviously. HPS instead of MH. Etc.

Prep during the veg stage like super cropping the branches before they bud will vastly increase bud size too.

This is very basic stuff and more guys here can give even better answers but this will give you something to look into.

Happy growing.

I’m already flushing. The 64 day flowering recommendation is due on 8/19/2016 (couple weeks) and then I’ll go from there. Keep an eye on the Trichomes. Soon as they get cloudy with a few amber I’ll probly put the hack to’em!!!

I personally don’t start the flush till I see about 30% Amber so they are almost 90% by harvest. This is a good level for medical use.

At this point in the process the buds may still put on weight tho. They can greatly increase size in the last two weeks. If the trichs are still not cloudy it may want a bit more. You sound like you have a good plan. Send us some pics so we can drool.

Look at my last grow under “Budding with LEDs”. To see what I had to harvest. Also Robert has a great blog on when to harvest here. I just worry because one of all of our biggest mistakes early on is harvesting too early cuz we just want to.

Anybody paper bag dry buds? Layering buds in bag with strips of bag inbetween. Do you put in bag right after choppin? Or hang them for a couple three days first ?
