Is it true for the pot size that certain sizes will only grow a certain amount or will any size pot allow for full growth of the plant?
Preferably 5 gal or larger. Ive seen successful grows out of solo cups, but you need to also think about volume. The less volume, the more you will be watering and feeding. More chances of messing up and even a longer time to recover. Ive grown in 3 5 10 and 25 gal pots. 5 to 10 is my preference, but for my winter experiment, i have 3 25 gal and 1 10. The larger your container, the more you can train yoir plants to cover more surface area and the more you will yield. Keep in mind though that pot size is only part of the equation. Quality lights, mediums, and nutes also play a huge role in your yield. Here is a chart to help with your overall grow.
How many plants do you plan on growing and the size of the grow space determine the vessel size. 2 plants in 3 gallon fabric pots works well in a 2 x 4 for me
Is that two separate pots per plant?
@ChittyChittyBangin nice chart sir
Yes, you should never grow more than 1 plant per vessel. Plant roots will compete for nutrients is one issue
I’m doing an experiment now with autos, I have GDP in a 3, 5, and 7 gal. The 3 gallon has filled out and is filling out at an accelerated rate, 5 gal is right behind it and the 7 gal is the least filled out. I assume since I layered my medium this is organic btw. The roots hit the next level nutrients sooner than the 5 and 7 gal. So now just waiting until flowere to measure the difference.
Cool let us know end results!
Bigger pots/soil bigger plants
I’ve observed what your seeing in that a plant will concentrate resources to root development and once well established (don’t know what percentage etc ) then redirects resources to above ground growth so it makes sense your observations.
Bigger pot more soil more room for roots to expand.
It may also be that autos will get bigger until they experience running low on soil room and then trigger flowering? Just a thought.
I’ve had autos get 1oz and up to 9oz and everything in between but mostly grow photo and again bigger pot has more soil so more room for roots.
Just look at those trees they grow outside
I would say 3-5 gallons is good but 5 gallon is better if room isnt as much an issue
Bigger pot = more soil = bigger plant
In general this hold true
Look at the monster “trees” of cannabis they grow outside in the ground or in hundred+ gallon pots.
Are they clones?
From seed the results may just be genetics.
In my 3x4 tent i will do 4 plants in 3 gal bags or 2 plants in 5s. Seems to work well.
Have 450 watts of lighting.
Bigger pots work great for photo. A small increase auto I see but they flower when they want. Photo will grow huge in big pots. I have pulled 2.5 dry from 1 gg4. 10 gal pot. 3x3. Super fimmed. Trained wall to wall.
Seeds. ILGM autos from last deal so they are fresh.
The one in the 3 gal is already starting 4th node so I FIM that one already. The 5 has ot slightly sticking up on the 4th bit bearly and the 7gal is still unfolding on the 3rd so won’t start a 4th until next week. The way I figure is they will flip in the next 2 weeks. So next week I will top dress with bloom fertilizers. Because the roots should be hitting the bottom layer of bloom feed that I originally had in there, and the top dress will filter in from the top as I water in through bloom. Then there will be adequate so all I would need to do is start my boosters in the feed starting week 2 of flower.
Here is a pic from another grower. Both plants from the same fresh batch. Two completely different plants. Especially with autos do you get random results. Its in this thread.
The main reason why the plants in the smaller pots are ahead of the ones in bigger pots is because it takes less time to fill the small pots with roots. They’ll concentrate the majority of their resources on setting roots, then once they’ve filled the pots they focus their energy on growing. This is why transplanting helps so much with growth. A seedling in a large pot is going to take more time before it hits that rapid growth stage than a seedling in a small pot or cup.
Well you would only get the given max yield either way right?
Autos are different than photo
Also as mentioned by spineynorman they aren’t clones so each seed may/will vary.
What’s nice about larger pots is more room for soil and roots and nutrients etc etc
I’ve grown autos and phots in 1,3,5,7,10,20,35 or 45 gallon containers to harvest and have found bigger is better especially when I reuse that same soil again and again in that same pot no till regrow. Smaller the pot the more work it is.
I’ve had 3 plants in same 35 or 45 gal (can’t remember) container where they were mixed auto and photo and worked great and sometimes not so great haha had a blue dream kick the bucket in 2 days bam yet other 2 were harvested.
Bigger pots more soil more nutrients generally bigger plants
My recent grow will be 15 gal with 1.5cf soil (11gal) per container with room to add dry organic amendments and will be reusing them over and over in future no till grows
I’m rambling but that’s my story and I’m sticking to it
For now
Enjoy the day
Bigger roots = bigger fruits.
Coco is very different from soil when it comes to plant size in small pots. The Bigger Roots = Bigger Fruits is definitely true, but it applies better to soil then coco.
I currently have 12 autos in coco in 1 gal fabric pots. Day 25 today and I can tell they’re going to very large for being in one gal pots. Definitely much bigger than the ones I’ve done in soil with one gal pots in the past.
