Hi All.
I have tried to research this question and ask on other forums but can not find an answer.
I am relatively new to trying to breed. I managed to cross two breeds and have planted some of the results. I have found one that is growing the way I like and I have recently flipped her, just showing pistils. I took some clones prior to flipping.
My question is: If I am happy with the way she smokes and want to use this as my new strain do I just make one of the clones turn to seed? Will that stabilise the new breed? Will I get the same results, or is it more complicated than that? At the moment I do not want to change the way she is growing.
You need a male, to breed. Are you cloning your male? How do you pollenate? Have you done any pheno selecting? Im mean, lets say you take an excellent Afghan and a superb Moroccan male, you pollenate your Afghan. It made seed… what do you do next? You may have cloned the excellent female and superb male, but if you only breed them you will only get more seed right? Lets say you grew many plants from mom and dads seed? They are all kinda different, some big, some wide, some tall, some smell great but suck in the shape department? Well we pheno select and can do one of two things right away… take our 3 finest females and breed them with our cloned male… remember we liked him. We can also take our finest 3 males and breed them with our cloned female… this the starting point in our breeding process. We continue to select our finest examples and breed them into our desired parents. This process will begin to select for traits, and after several iterations, you will begin to see homogenized characteristics and your plants will mostly be similar from planting to planting. Its why a crop that has been domestically grown without additional genetic input looks the same from plant to plant. The issue is that eventually your seed will begin to lose vigor and new gentic material helps to get that back.
Hi Cannabian, No males. I used Colloidal Silver to turn a female then used the pollen to fertilise the other. I then planted the seeds and yes, I have a few different phenos and like this one the best for her looks, how she is growing. I will have to wait until she has flowered before I can even judge her results, can not wait tho!
PS: I was just wondering if I clone her a few times (which I have) and repeat the same process with the clones, will they eventually produce a stable strain when turned to seed?
I understand that all seeds produced will not be exact as a clone would be.
Cloning isn’t going to stabilize your phenos, it’s just going to isolate the ones specific to that plant. To truly stabilize you’re going to have to back cross.
Using genes from the the same plant to create a strain is not going to work, you will need genes from a male and separate female. I would highly recommend that any colloidal treatments or hormonal stuff be totally avoided because you dont want to be messing with genes or chromosomes when breeding, thats like increasing your odds of having a downs syndrome baby. Use un altered genetic material. Select for traits, and take clones to preserve material. Its a long process, you cannot rush it. It s why seed cost so much. Years are invested in finding and creating that much loved strain. Not going to happen in 2 years.
Real intense breeding programs require lots and lots of plants too, say 100 or more. Phenos require that you have the largest cross section or population to choose from.
Good info, I would like to here more.
I tried it several times with fair results.
With that said, in the last 2 years I have bought seeds 7 times here.
I use colloidal silver and breed alot of female crosses you can stabilize once you get to a f3 and do your final crosses and then bx the best till f7 you will be uniformly and stable and you can run clones and flip them for pollen with no problems for your feminized line
Then if want to make it regular save your seeds from the f5 or something you like and then find a Male that as close as possible to your new strain grow breed and then grow new seeds and hunt females out and add the f5 fem pollen and grow new set and hunt the Male from first reg crosses and rebreed to get out the Male stuff you don’t want it takes time then bx 7 times and then very stable genetics and uniform there is alot of ways to do this just remember what ever you spray with colloidal silver throw away just get the seeds and pollen from it and throwaway the rest
