Kinda depends if you have any height restrictions. They can double in height the 1st couple weeks of flower, sometimes more.

Should fan leaves be taken off before switching

Unless plants are sexually mature, going to 12/12 won’t do anything. I’d let them get larger before doing anything.

Your fan leave store all your energy and nutrients i wouldn’t take any for off unless their touching soil/ get wet when you water or if their blocking airflow
