So I have a plant of unknown sex (freebie sealed package was marked “regular”) that I’ve taken a few clones off of. I want to flip a clone just to determine sex before going further. The clones are rooted, but had a little too much light on them before I realized what was happening, so there’s a good bit of yellowing, but they otherwise seem fairly healthy. I’ve done some looking online and here, and am not having much luck with a definitive answer, so I’m turning to the pro’s
My question, is just how soon can I put a clone on 12/12 just to determine sex? I’d consider the flipped clone sacrificial, and discard it once I was assured of sex. I was thinking the lower left one with the most roots maybe. They’re all rooting to some degree except the upper center one is from topping yesterday, it’s new.
Some info on the parent; it’s 1 month old today, and nodal spacing is beginning to stagger. There are growths at the stem nodes near the stipules, but it’s indeterminate as to which way it’s leaning, and it’s also my understanding that nodal growth indicators are not ultimately determinate to sex anyway…?
I’ve put clippings in a glass of water and flipped them and they’ve showed me the sex sign before developing roots. Staggering of nodes not a good way of determining male or female.
Well that would be perfect, good to know, thanks! I think it was a little early on the plant in general in my particular scenario, but I’ll definitely be trying that moving forward. I’ll flip one today then.
My take is if seeds can be grown 12/12 from start to induce early flowering that you could do the same with clones and thinking sex should come sooner with them being clones?? I flip my clones a week after transplant but generally because I’m running a SOG of 6-8 in a 3 x 4

Funny story…when I would go to nurseries with her I would notice her look around then snap off several plant branches and put them in her pocket book and when we would get home I asked her why…. She rooted these and would say why buy the expensive plants when you can snatch a few future clones
Your Mom was the coolest ever!! I do the same thing now at restaurants and bars for the Wifey. My Grandparents raised me from the age of 7 on up till they passed when I was 15 but all the gardening and flower stuff stuck in my head like glue. I’ve been told I’m my Grandfather’s child lol he was the flower man not Grandma. It’s funny we was raised around plants to nurture our bodies now we hang around the plants to heal our bodies!!!
