As the title says. Im curious what every1 else does. I typically like to be below 800 myself for last two weeks. Although still can see signs of minor fox tailing. At this point, its not the temp. I did have minor foxtailing b4 as well with different plants, but in that case it was the heat. Im starting to think you can be down in the 600’s for the final push. So how do you guys do it
Im very interested to read the responses. To this point ive never had a problem with foxtailing but this go round in my 4x4 i have godfather og under a hlg 600r spec and let the grow get ahead of me as far as training and these plants really stretched 2’ plus to within a few inches of the light and there are massive amounts of foxtailing. Ive dialed the light back but i believe tha damage is done.
Within a few inches? Oh boy. My first run with led’s as well. But im used to the hps lights, so this has been a learning curve for me. It be nice to get a more accurate statistic like ppfd. Kinda like starting over lol. Every1 says reducing ppfd to stop the foxtailing but how much.
You can do it a couple ways. You can decrease the light intensity (by raising the light or dimming the light) or decrease the light hours. I found it easier to just decrease light hours. Last few weeks I’m running 10 on, 14 off.
At what ppfd?
If dropping light hours I just leave it at 800.
Oh…so your staying 800 entire time. Thankyou for your input. I was running 1000 to 1100 most of time before i reduced. Thinking that may been a bit too much. Mixed views depending on who you ask. I like your approach though. Next run im going to maintain 900 and wait untill first signs then adjust.
To hit DLI you’re looking at 700 for veg (18hr) and 800 for flower (12hr). You really need to utilize co2 if you’re running in the thousands. Otherwise you’re just feeding light that the plant can’t process.
And remember. Ppfd is an average of your canopy, not just a single point measurement. You may be at 1000 dead center but the edges may be at 300
Appreciate your input brother. I have two 350r in tent. So a measurement dead center of a board would give me a nice number. I put a plant under each board centered. In other words, i do get a loss on edges but not more then 250 so my numbers are pretty good c9nsidering the spread
I use a 350r in a 2x4, and I get a little foxtailing too. I was down around 600 ppfd towards the end at 11 hours on. These lights are beasts.
Back in the old days what folks call foxtailing now days we called crowning. And many growers wanted it. Many referred to them as the crown jewels. When trimming we lopped them off and ended up with primo bud and the crown jewels were for hash and honey oil. Foxtailing was a style of grow some growers did to push the crap out of there large kolas in a natural style grow. Back in the old days there was a light war between 315/600w Hids and Florescent HO/Mono Pins lights. We would rack up 4’ and 8’ HO fixtures like bar lights after drilling holes in the top of the fixtures and detailing out the ballast wires so fans could blow the ballast heat out of the fixture. The HO tubes didn’t put out much heat at all compared to the Hids. Anyway growers would super crop the big main kolas and let them grow along and into the HO tubes this in turn got more light to the lower buds. That was know as foxtailing because the big kolas looked like a fox tail growing fating up along the HO bulbs.
Thank you for your input.
Ya im not sure y ppl would want foxtailing. For me its a loose top crown down two inches on every cola. If its not foxtailing, like at all then the buds will be more dense. But ya also now adays ppl are calling pistils that wont turn foxtailing as well. High ppfd will push out new pistils until the end. But thank you for input sparky
It’s all about surface area for trichomes and resin for dab, concentrate production. I was chatting with a cat yesterday that grows for foxtails. He is in the grow light industry. He wants his buds to have all the surface area he can get and all the knotted up gnarly tuffs he can grow. All his production goes in a press.
There’s good and bad foxtailing. A dense bud with some foxtails is good but a loose, airy foxtail bud is bad.
