Seeds From Feminized Plant

Greetings! Lss… had a Granddaddy Purple get temp stressed, produced nanners and then some seeds.
Q: Could some of these seeds be male?
Thought I’d try and grow them. Bad idea? Thanks for your insight! Tom

I dont see how it would be any different than bag seed from dispensary weed and Ive grown that just fine a couple times.

If it was a feminized plant, then seeds will be fems also. Only way to get reg seeds is pollinating by a male plant. Just watch them, as they could also hermie on you if the trait was passed on in the plants genes. Hopefully it was just stress that caused it.:flexed_biceps::oncoming_fist:

I was hoping that was the case with the hg seeds.
Going into last winter, I had difficulty keeping the tent at 75degF.
Heater not accurate enough.
GDP doesn’t like being cold!
Gonna try the hg seeds and keep them warm.
I’ll keep a watchful eye.
Thank you much!
Tom

VIVOSUN makes a heat mat and heater controller, you could plug your heater into it and turn wide open, controller can be set to turn on and off at any temp. You could control to the degree then. They aren’t expensive either.

So, a hermie plant’s seeds are more likely to herm?

If it’s genetic they sure can.

No I don’t think it’s genetic, I’m quite sure I stressed the plants, at least once the timer did a thing and left the lights on for at least 3 days 3 weeks before harvest plus some other stress from my defoliations and training..

They may be fine then. I just think that some plants hermie with less stress than others, I’ve always been afraid the offspring would stress easily too. I burned over a thousand seeds from a cross I did because one White Runtz hermed and so did a few of the offspring, I just won’t take that chance as a breeder, better for me to try another cross and hope for better results. Just growing a few, I wouldn’t worry as much, just keep and eye on them in flower to catch any unwanted sacs before they can open. Your lucky they didn’t try to reveg on you with the lights on time!:+1::oncoming_fist::wink:

Thank you for your insight!
I will proceed with caution.
Maybe I’ll learn something along the way.

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the hermie trait in all cannabis genes?

Technically, yes.
But the probability of hermaphrodite is a lot larger in poorly bred strains. :

" Here is a breakdown of why this is and how it works:

  1. Survival Mechanism (Nature)

Cannabis is a dioecious plant (having separate male and female plants). If a female plant is in an environment where it cannot find a male for pollination (e.g., no males are present, or it’s dying due to stress), it may develop male flowers (often called “nanners” or bananas) to self-pollinate and ensure the next generation.

  • Landrace Sativas: Some equatorial, wild landrace strains are known to have a higher inherent tendency to show intersex traits compared to more stable, modern hybrids.
  1. Stress-Induced Hermies (Nurture)

Even with stable genetics, a plant can be forced into hermaphroditism through environmental stress, including:

  • Light leaks: Interrupting the dark cycle during flowering.
  • Irregular Light Schedules: Inconsistent 12/12 timing.
  • Environmental Stress: Extreme heat, humidity fluctuations, or cold.
  • Physical Damage/Nutritional Issues: Excessive training or over/underfeeding.
  1. Genetic Propensity (Nature + Nurture)

Some strains or individual plants are genetically unstable or predisposed to producing male flowers much faster than others, often due to poor breeding or inbreeding.

  • If a plant is a genetic hermaphrodite, it will likely develop male parts even in perfect conditions.
  • If a plant is genetically stable, it will only turn hermaphrodite under extreme stress."
