Bro that thing is huge! Very impressive. You certainly know how to grow some fungi. Great work.

What a difference in 12 hours!! Possible contender for mushroom of the month! LOL

Watch your timing if you order Boomr Bags for substrate. They are having supply chain delays. I ordered a bag 12 days ago and it hasn’t shipped yet.

Seems to be the case with just about everything these days. I’ll keep that in mind for sure thanks for the heads up. That is a single 3 rd flush monster I almost got rid of that tub too. Glad I waited

You must be ready to put your jars to substrate by now right?

Yeah, they’ll be ready in a week. It’s why I’m bummed about the Boomr Bag being so late. I have coco, manure, and gypsum in case I need to make my own.

That is an incredible mushroom :mushroom:. Great work like always

Is it possible to fruit in the current substrate it’s in?

I have no idea @Covertgrower but I didn’t want you to think I was ignoring the question.

Here is my question for you folks. How do I keep my cakes damper? I am pretty certain my cakes are getting to dry and not producing any or very little. I mist the tub 3 times a day but it doesn’t seem to be enough.

I could fruit the blocks, but yield would be poor. Bulk substrate is by far the way to go for good yield.

I should place my order now, so it gets here in time then. The bag is really starting to turn white from the mycelium. I don’t think it’s time yet but it’s getting there.
No worries @Capt.Cola it was kind of a open question directed at no one.

Are you hydrating the cakes before fruiting them?

How are you covering your cakes? I’ve been using ā€œshoeboxā€ totes (6qt). I keep the lid on during colonization and crack the lid (just sit it on top without snapping into place) when starting fruiting. As they start to grow I set another tote on upside down to create a humidity dome. Mist inside of that empty tote up to 3x per day when humidity is low.

Fruiting bodies are 90% water so as they grow they are going to suck out the moisture no matter what you do which is why you soak the cake to rehydrate to start another flush.

I’ve also had good luck with adding some Orbeez water beads on top of the substrate when ambient RH is very low to keep things moist in there with good success.

The other thing that may be worth reading up on is ā€œBubble Wrap Tekā€. Basically laying a sheet of bubble wrap over the substrate until fruiting starts to help keep the micro-climate right though I haven’t had to resort to that yet myself.

I know some of what I said above is obvious, but trying to be comprehensive for any new growers following in the background.

All of that said, just inoculated 2 fresh microwaveable brown rice bags yesterday. The cycle begins again.

when I did Pf tech my results were similar to yours. if you want better results grain to bulk is far superior.

I’ve had very good luck going to bulk with nothing but the colonized grain into coco hydrated with boiling water (leave covered until cool). While I’m sure mixing in some other form of nutrients would increase yield I get plenty of good growth for my needs with almost zero hassle.

2 bags of colonized microwave rice spawned into straight coco yielded a bit over 20g dry from the first flush in the last round…

I really like using coco, manure, and gypsum.

The manure feeds micellum and the gypsum keeps it from sticking in clumps.

Yes hydrating for 24 hrs and I get some action after a few days. Then I either get just one or two mushrooms or none at all the past couple.

@CygnusX1 I have tried a couple different bins. I tried a 6qt shoebox that got started well and stalled with nothing usable. I also have a 20qt and a 30 that I have been trying. What’s odd also is that my perlite is drying out also. So it must be something I am doing incorrectly. The lid’s are usually just resting on top so air can get into it. I did have a small fan running in the tent along with my heater.

I tried the ub brown rice bags but don’t see any growth yet. It’s been 13 days since inoculation of 1ml of spores. I got a couple more bags to try out and see how they do.
@Gardenguy that’s what I might have to do. I was trying to avoid buying a pressure cooker but maybe no choice if I want to have a chance of growing a lot of fungi. The ub is my attempt at getting grain to bulk.
@First has also been telling me to go bulk. I’ll look up the thread to see what pressure cookers are being used. We talked about it not too long ago.

On a side note I put two cakes outside that didn’t look good and they both started to push out mushrooms. Are they going to be edible if the grow? I think they were getting the green mold. Also put another one that was starting to get something in a tub of water and that that one pushed out growth also.

That’s what I’m talking about. Maybe I didn’t use enough spores in my first two. I’m going to try a few more times.

The most common cause of this is inadequately matured micellum (not letting them colonize enough.) I don’t know if that might be the case for you. I let mine fill out completely, and then let them colonize for an additional week.
