PH values in FFOF

I have a couple WW fem in Fox farms ocean forest soil.
Last watering, the PH in was adjusted to 5.8.
The runoff measured 2.9.

well…1st; You need to use 6.5-7.0 PH for soil. 5.8 is a hydroponic PH value.

2nd. If you are only adding water; Don’t worry about runoff unless you are experiencing an issue. Meanwhile, you are just washing nutrients out of your soil. Soil you paid way too much money for, IMO

Happy growing, lw

I guess I’ve been reading too many hydro threads and didn’t realize they were.
Couple that with the fact that the guy that sold me the soil said to water with 5.8.

@roost1

I use Fox Farms Soils and 6.5 or so going in pH is good.

Was it possible you misread the number when you tested the runoff?

Do you know how to do a slurry test?

Slurry Test

In a glass

Take an equal part of water and adjust pH to 6.5 Add and equal part of your growing medium

Stir and wait 15 minutes and stir again. Let settle for a moment and test pH.

My cheap yellow meter broke so I got a better one, calibrated it and tried it out.
I didn’t read it wrong. There was not very much runoff and I was kind of surprised it was that low.
I’m going to water today and I’ll try the slurry test as well.

Sounds good. What meter did you get?

I am not familiar with that particular meter, but it looks reasonably decent! @roost1

Here are the results of the slurry test.

Temp 75 degrees
Starting values C-h20 PH 7.7
Adjusted PH 6.4
TDS 053

End results PH 4.5
TDS 679

IMO 4.5 pH soil is not something you can grow in. @roost1 That soil is either very old or the contents in the bag need to be shaken up and stirred up good.

Maybe do that shake up/ stir up that bag of soil and make sure it is mixed well and then run another slurry test?

I took the soil from one of the pots my plants are growing in.
I have half a bag left I could check that.
Soil could be screwed up from the old meter…
Seems like I added a lot of PH down to the water I used previously.
I was going to post a journal when I had some time but haven’t.
You probably need more info to help me.
I tried to post a picture but it didn’t load. Pics from my camera are to large I believe.

mix that half bag up good and try another test.

Yes, you should absolutely do a grow journal 100% please do.

Post a support ticket in your first post so that all the info is on your grow journal from the beginning

They all look great @roost1

hi there, I’m new to all of this. I’ve never grown anything in my life. I’m learning by reading everything I can by Robert Bergman. I started with blueberry, amnesia haze and northern lights, the only survivor is Northern lights and it looks beautiful. I’m growing in a tent, I have 300 watt LED grow light, using a 5 gallon grow bag, fox farm ocean soil but it’s in a rapid rooter so I don’t know if that makes a difference. The moisture and light are all good the PH is around 7.5 isn’t it a little too alkaline? the light is over the plant about 24inch away. for the past couple of days I’ve left the lights on 24/7. Today she is 13 days old or 10 since sprouting. She is a dark green with lots of leaves. I’m so worried this one will die too. even though she is beautiful. I also worry about enough humidity. the temp is around 72-84 humidity is around 32% to 50% i was thinking of putting a humidifier in the tent. Any thoughts or suggestion?

PH should be 6.5
