Organic Soil 101

@HRBJr, native soil is free, but you’re probably going to have some seeds in it. There’s many choices if you’re buying. If your soil was too “heavy”, you could go with some greensand; your rock dusts should also have plenty.

This is a really good soil 101 type video:

@HRBJr your bucket is it just chicken manure or or does it have straw in it chicken manure is nitrogen so you use it as nitrogen burn like grass clippings and you can make tea from it also but you have to be easy

Can use silica blast. Good product. Works well.

It’s straight chicken manure , i do know it is HOT and doesnt take much. Im guessing i will mix in a couple gallons when i transfer to larger container. How much of the silica blast should i mix in the 55gal container.

@HRBJr, not knowing how “hot” the manure is yet, and having some time in your hands too, during the summer months, your best bet is maybe to use it to start a separate compost pile, or bin. The manure is your hot nitrogen component, you want to mix it with several parts of “brown” carbon rich ingredients- shredded straw, cardboard etc. Add your kitchen waste too.

You can just make a pile on the ground; once you’ve got some plants growing in it you know it’s good to go. Or you can speed things up with a compost tumbler, which helps keep things mixed and aerated. Turning the compost a few times speeds up the process.

The manure is fresh out the coop but it is already dry. He keeps sand in the coop and rakes it out weekly and puts it out in the sun, so its dry and sandy mix. I was going to transfer everything into a larger container and add some volcanic rock dust maybe 5lbs and a couple gallon buckets of chicken manure and maybe some mushroom compost if i have enough room in the new container? I still haven’t had a chance to watch the video but intend to do so asap.

You need to get the manure to break down i would do as @CurrDogg420 said make compost pile because chicken manure goes along way i use chicken manure i add it to my compost pile i pull from the bottom then that goes in the tumbler to break down further so the soil can feed the plants @HRBJr

@CurrDogg420 @Aussie_autos @Storm @Reed71 @dirtydave. Have a couple questions, i have added some old veggies to the compost bin and i am starting to see quite a few small flies, fruit flies, gnats? in the mix. Is this ok or should i start trying to treat with something? Also some of the worms are trying to crawl out of the container, when i turn on the light they will be some out of the dirt and up around the lid of the tote. I dont have them completely covered, about a 3" gap for air. Im getting a nice light layer of mold over the top of the dirt, i believe this is a good thing from what i have read?

@HRBJr The gnats are normal you don’t want to use anything to kill anything you can cover with screen or drill holes in center of lid

Rain here too, but it’s ok. It is cleaning up my mess. I had the latch not locked on my 55 gallon tumbler. As I was tumbling it all came out on me. A whole winters worth of tablescrapps and coffee grounds. I felt like biff in the manure truck ha.

I was about to spread it into the raised bed trench anyway. But the wheel burrow leaves less compost sludge on the ground. I am glad it was raining :sweat_drops:

The only problem is I cannot wear those shoes in public anymore. They smell like compost tumbler cologne.

I didn’t know you had chickens. That’s awesome. My wife won’t let me. My kids and I really want them. I am trying to convince her to let me start a bee hive as a compromise.

My neighbor for years would trek way out into the green belt to dump his clippings. I finally said to him he could drop them right next to my raised bed. It’s a lot closer. Grass clippings are my secret weapon. Any time the tumblers get out of balance and smelly, a few shovel fulls of grass clippings always stops it right away. It fires up the microbes and mixes in more air as you tumble. I do love the grass clippings…preferably before they go to seed.
