Nursery bags - any cons?

Hello! Our first grow didn’t get off to a great start so trying again. Going to use nursery bags this time for seedlings. Should I be concerned about the roots getting light like we would for a clear container?

Are there any cons to using them because all I have seen are pros?

Appreciate the help!!

They don’t have flat bottoms so they fall over if not supported.

Ah that makes sense. I was thinking the soil would weigh it down. I’ll have to test it out and see how I feel.

They become very top heavy and fall over with some type of support system.

The size I have will fit into a Solo cup for stability. Be sure to poke holes in the cup if you do use them. I think @Not2SureYet has some insight into them. Me; I’ve been using rockwool and liking it.

Thanks guys, that seems to be the general feedback- to watch out for stability. Think we are going to give them ago. We have some containers I think will be perfect. Thanks again!! :seedling: :seedling: :seedling:

@Myfriendis410 , with the solo cup size bags, you can transplant directly into media & the roots grow through the bag correct?

That’s my understanding.

Thanks everyone! I put them in solo cups and added cuts to the bottoms for drainage/circulation. :crossed_fingers:t2::crossed_fingers:t2:

@Vtbudz Where were you 10 hours ago?!? :joy: I just tried this out and you’re totally right. It stays up nice and firm even with dry soil. Great tip! Oh well… next time lol.

@Newt Thats what I planned to do, use existing pots I have. Sadly I only have like reallly small ones or really large ones. Luckily I had exactly 4 solo cups. :ok_hand:

They are out of the bags I use. They are about 20oz bags. I could get a link that is close in size if needed. The 9x9 bags are a gallon. And the roots grow out fine :+1: These are growing mostly down because this was in a autopot. So bottom fed.

@Not2SureYet ,That seems like a great way to avoid transplant shock, especially in an auto.

Appreciate the pic!! Looks like a great choice. I’m transplanting the bags from their solo cups today to their 5 gallon fabric pots forever home. :crossed_fingers:

What nursery bag dimensions fit solo cups? I saw a couple smaller ones online, but I’m sure if they’re optimal sizes.

I ordered 5.5” x 6.3” and they worked okay for the 16 ounce solo cups.
These may work better, as they’re about 4” x 4.7” : https://a.co/d/iYM1jfs
