Hi Forum Folks. So this is my 1st indoor grow and with a tent set up via ViVoSun with all the bells and whistlers for a starter. So many in fact, that I burnt up all my girls when they were very young. They have since recovered and I got all the pH and nutrients, and the Light settings going the right direction, etc. However, due to the light burn and probably the low pH over the 1st about 6 weeks of their young lives, all 6 plants are stunted. I mean like maybe 12" if I’m lucky. The 2 AO are taller but barely have any leaves and they both have the shortest taproot. They have all been Vegetating for about a month now. Their Taproot, most of them, is very long and has neared the bottom of the 10gal bags they are currently in. The 2 shortest, I think the OB actually have the longest taproot. At this point I’ve accepted the fact that this 1st grow won’t be a great producer/harvest, so it’s all good and I’ll do better with the next 6. So then regardless of how small they are they need repotted again. I now have the 30 gallon bags and am wondering if I can’t put 2 plants each into three 30 gallon bags. Like 2 of the same strain opposite one another in one bag and just for this 1 grow? I just think it would be a waste of soil, compost, perlite, nutrients, and the bags themselves to use 6 bags that I’ll throw away once I harvest. See? What do you guys say? I have 2 each from the Fruity MixPack. The Super Lemon Haze, Agent Orange, and Orange Bud. Here are the most recent photos showing how small they are. I put them into the water on April 6th and they all sprouted and went into dirt on the 7th. So we’re almost at 3 months now.
The plants may mature at different rates, the plants will compete for water and nutrients, and the root systems will become entangled.
Okie dokie. I didn’t know what kind of issues it could bring. Now I do. I’ll do the 6 bags. Gotta go get some more dirt today.
After posting this I also noticed that they sent me 20gal bags and not 30gal. I already had filled 2 of them up so am out of luck there. But Believe Walmart.com will hear about it. Lol!
Thanks so much for answering my question.
Hi Karen, Welcome! Just curious they need to be moved to bigger pots? Most here grow in 3 to 5 gallon pots. They should have plenty of room in 10 gal pots. How are you checking the tap roots?
Hey. Thanks for responding. They are currently in 3 gallon bags and the 20 gallon is the next biggest I have. I do have a bunch of 5 gallon buckets but don’t really want to bring anything from outside to inside, and they are not new and such.
Well, I stir and look at them when I water. I am very careful and haven’t broken any of the roots or anything. I just push in the sides of the bag and then shake it a little and put my hands in at the edge and pivot side to side until the roots are all loose. Then I am able to stir up the soil. I don’t know why I do this. I just do. Once I put them into their permanent bag I won’t do it again. It’s probably not only wrong but also stupid to do it but I really can’t help myself.
What about 7 gallon bags? There’s a feed store close by that carries those.
Ok, I read 10 gal bags. I’m new myself but just from general gardening I would stop the root checking. That seems like a transplant or worse situation each time. I think they need a chance to get established and do their thing without being stunted. 7 gal should be fine too, but at some point it just costs more and takes up space, especially for a small indoor grow. I’m sure more experienced growers will chime in on the pros and cons of bucket size.
Also, there is a wealth of knowledge here to absorb. I like to check out others grow journals to see how they do it. Kinda like growing vicariously. lol
Yeah, I’m actually looking at even making my own bags for this time. I have this person telling me one thing and that person telling me another. So I am like just kinda floating around over here wondering which makes more sense. And I have no clue. What you say about my rooting around in there sure does make a lot of sense. I never thought of it like that. Thanks for that. I think ima just head to the hardware and get some material. I gotta do this today and really don’t have the gas or cash to be going all over creation for smaller bags. Thanks for getting back to me.
Hey no problem Like I said, i’m learning too. Lots of stuff to figure out and we tend to be nervous and think we should be doing something all the time. One thing i’m learning here, less is more in many cases. I’ll try to add a link to another thread you can check out on pot size. You can also use the search feature at top right and find most anything you want to research.
Yeah, I hear less is more on most everything too. On the websites anyway. Seems the opposite when face to face talking to someone. I tried to search for hashtags when creating my post and every word I entered had 0 results. Lol! I have bad luck 360.
We still talking about weed?
Sry. my mind wandered. lol
Don’t know much about hashtags, I don’t do social media, but if you want to search something like say pot size, just type in pot size or something and it should get you there. Feel free to check out my journal, i’m putting my first grow out there for all to see. It could be a wild ride.
I would use 5gal pots i use 5gal buckets there tale an skinny and you can also use grow bags yes also agree with @MidwestGuy plants in same pot compete with each other
My precious!! I get it totally.
Lol! I’ll have a look.
It is so freakin hard to get anything from an actual brick and mortar store anymore. Everything has to be ordered. I had no idea how gigantic these 20gal bags were gonna be. I have a 5x5x6’ tent and would have to open it up on the 3 sides to be able to even feed 6 plants. At this point, knowing they will be small anyway, I’m thinking just leave them in the 3gal bags they are in. Or maybe just out some pillow cases into a box and use that. I have many 5gal buckets, but they are all used and dirty and they are many odd insects here, so I figure nothing inside that has been outside. You know? Next time I will do better. I have already learned most if what NOT to do on this 1st attempt.
You are most awesome Dude.
You can get new buckets at Walmart lowes about any hardware store @ShureGreen
Yeah, easy enough if they weren’t 6 bucks each. Don’t have it rn.
Understand my friend happy growing
Forgot to say i do use feed sacks also I’ve saved from crack corn and they work awesome as well
