My third and final plant is a Northern Lights in a 25 gallon pot. It is near my chicken coop but not close enough to cause a problem. I probably should have put the threads for my other two plants into Grow Journals. Is there a way to change the tags of a post after already creating it?
Not sure on the tags, never tried, but I can merge the topics together for you. Tag me in the other one, and I’ll merge them for you.
I do want each in its own thread for monitoring the progress of each individual plant. They are all in their own unique environments and are different strains so in terms of journaling it makes more sense to separate them. By merging the three i would also have to keep specifying which is which in the pictures and the discussions could go more all over the place. I will update each on a weekly basis.
This morning I took 2 new pictures as it has been one week. There has been some decent growth. Last night I gave her a root drench of Athena IPM and then this morning fed it some fox farm fertilizer based on the feeding schedule. This is the first time I fed it since transplant. I wasn’t going to feed it quite yet but Athena recommends flushing out the IPM with nutrient solution within 24 hours after doing the drench. The plant was already well fed but definitely not overfed so I figure it can take some poop soup.
I also began noticing preflowers this morning. Not real flowers just the single pistil where branches meet the central stalk. In our climate plants usually do not begin showing signs of sex at all until July although I did start these plants 2 weeks earlier than last year and based on my research preflowers can emerge even when the plant still has lots of vegging to do. I got worried at first because I don’t want a plant that flowers prematurely, but for now just gonna ride it out.
Here is an updated picture of the Northern Lights. She has gotten much bigger this week! We have been going through a heat wave here in New England and the high levels of sunlight have made a huge difference.
This week I fed it some Fox Farm nutes based on the feeding schedule. Then yesterday I fed it some Hyshield and ION-14L.
Hyshield is basically Chitosan, which is present in the shells of crustaceans and insects. Plants detect being attacked by bugs by sensing chitosan. So when fed chitosan it tricks the plant into thinking it is being attacked by bugs which causes the plant to increase its defenses and also makes it more resistant to extreme temperatures.
ION-14L is silicon and humic acids. Silicon strengthens the plant’s cell walls and also makes it more resistant to extreme temperatures. I figure the chitosan and silicon should help these girls ride out the heat wave. And it looks like the extreme sun has helped those fox farm nutes kick in!
One week later, really bushing the fuck out. This week I top dressed tbe plants with some coast of maine plant food, coast of maine lobster meal, and happy frog all purpose fertilizer which i mixed into a few gallons of soil and compost. The compost was mostly coast of maine lobster compost and earthworm castings and some local composted cow manure. The soil portion is fox farm soil and coast of maine soil. Basically just dumped a gallon of that very concentrated top dressing mix onto each plant.
Great looking plants. Very healthy. I love NL and follow all the grows I can find of it. Once ran into a guy who bred only one strain of NL. Dudes prob growing f21s right now…lol.
I’ma hang out n watch your grow. I’m new here and trying to find my way around. Love reading threads.
Best of luck to ya…she a beauty.
I just noticed the roots poking out of the bottom this morning. Hopefully she flowers within the next couple weeks or so to prevent becoming too root bound. Should have used a fabric pot.
Ya should be fine with 25gal pots. They are loving the mix for sure. These are going to get pretty big. She’s big now. Imagine after her stretch.
She hasn’t even started flowering yet, she will be huge just by end of veg
They usually start flowering around mid july to early august, so this one probably has about another 2 or 3 weeks in veg.
Fortunately root growth slows down during flower which is soon so it should only be mildly root bound at end of grow.
Yes, it does slow down in flower. I think you’ll be just fine in 25gal. I use 7 gal max indoors and never get pot bound even on a long grow.
Indoors and outdoors are COMPLETELY different animals. Most of the plants I grow literally won’t even fit into a grow room. Like I said - we aren’t even done with veg yet and I see roots poking out of the bottom. Not a good sign but I should be okay.
A couple of years ago I grew my plants in 10 gallon pots. At the end of the season when I went to go put the containers into storage, I was unable to lift them out of the ground. I eventually got them out but couldn’t just pull them straight out. I had to twist really fucking hard to snap the roots.
Basically the roots grew out of the holes at the bottom of the 10 gallon pot and grew so deep into the ground that a fully grown man couldn’t lift it out. So while 7 gal is enough for an indoor grow, 10 gallons isn’t even close to enough for an outdoor plant. The plants did finish and gave me a quarter pound each, but could have achieved more of their potential in larger containers. Outdoors tend to do even better in the ground provided it’s good soil.
Sorry I’m a day late, I tried uploading the pics yesterday but they kept failing to upload for some reason. Seems like a bug with the website or something.
Anyways, the tops of the plants are abovemy head now. She’s vegging put really fucking hard.
I hope everyone had a Happy Fourth of July!
Sorry for not having updated this thread lately, I broke up with my girlfriend recently and my mental health has not been well.
Here is an updated picture from a couple days ago. About two or three weeks ago I recorded a 15 minute video tour of my garden too and uploaded it to my google Drive.
She just started flowering. Based on Northern Light flowering times that means she should be done when September ends. Maybe I should go listen to some Green Day.
Latest pics
Here are the latest pics of the Northern Lights. She is about a few weeks into flower now and so she has finally been starting to bud up nice. Over these next few weeks the buds should get much bigger in size. Northern Lights has a short flower time so she should be ready to harvest in about a month and a half, if that. I’m thinking end of September, should be done by October 1st. But I’ll need the jewelry loupe to know for sure.
Here are the latest pictures. She is budding out beautifully. Definitely the most perfect specimen out of all of my plants. She isn’t the biggest or highest yielding but there are absolutely zero fungal or mold problems. And no broken branches, the plant is very stocky and able to withstand hurricane winds. The Watermelon Zkittlez has low disease / mold resistance and has begun developing bacterial leaf spot. The super silver haze grew unmanagably large and the base developed a huge crack from hurricane winds. I have tied it to some fence posts after the storm but the crack caused some of the super silver haze to start yellowing - she should still produce a great crop but is not as flawless as my northern lights.
Northern Lights doesn’t grow very big and is lower yielding but has excellent disease resistance and is easy to grow. Something that reliably does very well is overall a better pick than something super exotic or high yielding if the bud turns to shit.
She is definitely not ready yet but getting close. I would say about 3 weeks out. I love the close up of the trichomes.
