My seeds are coming tomorrow!!! I’m growing in 5 gal fabric pots using FFOF. Should I flush soil first before I place germinated seed into pot or just put germinated seed into dry soil and then water? Any help or advice would be great.
Welcome to the forum ,Just drop them after you germinate. I soak mine for 24 to 48 hours in warm water with a tsp of hydrogen peroxide in a dark cabinet. The peroxide helps break down the membrane protecting the seed. Then I place on a plate with a damp paper towel base then I cover it with another damp paper towel cover with another plate to create a dome. Then let it sit another 24 to 48 hours. Then I use tweezers to poke a hole no deeper than 1/4 inch. And drop it into a pot of dry soil tap root down and cover it back with dirt. Then I spray the area a couple times a day to keep the seed moist. There’s no reason to flush soil that more of a concern with Coco. I definitely appreciate it. I’ve been doing so much research but just don’t feel as confident about and don’t wanna mess anything up for my first grow. I’ll definitely be hitting you up for more help @SKORPION
I favor going into a neutral medium like a seed starter mix or pure peat. Seedlings don’t like the nutes in FFOF and can be burned or at least slowed down due to the presence of salts. Best to germinate seeds as stated above; when a tail appears I put into damp peat (Promix HP) in a Red Solo Cup and water very sparingly with a spray atomizer. A clear Solo Cup is placed over the red one as a dome and that’s what I spray twice a day. Seedlings get all of their moisture out of the air for the first week or two until a tap root is established. It’s almost pointless to water soil media. Do poke holes in the red cup for air and drainage.
When you are ready to transplant, dump your FFOF into fabric pot, press a Solo cup into center to create a depression then decant and plant seedling.
Over watering is your biggest enemy right now. Doing this even with autos will help manage for moisture better than going right into final pot.
I was planning on planting them directly into their 5 gal pots. This is my first grow so I wanted to make it as simple as possible until I am completely comfortable with what I need to do.
This actually makes it harder. It’s counter-intuitive but watering practices (or lack of) is the main cause of seedling failure. Recommend you do as I suggest. (which is what the majority of growers do BTW).
Ok thanks for the info. Any suggestions on lighting for the seedling stage?
That kinda depends on your setup. I use an old blurple light in a small styrofoam nursery box. You will know if it’s not enough because the seedling will want to stretch. Good lighting will keep it fairly squat as it grows.
