Newbie outdoor grow issue- flowering?

Hello,

I am new to growing, I have 5 plants, all clones. Everything has been going well, I am getting awesome growth. In the last few days, one of my plants seems to have started flower. It is a pineapple upside cake. Not an auto. I assumed I had another month before I would even see any flowering. This plant is putting off strong odor and I see the beginnings of flowers. It also stopped growing, and is smaller than the others.

I stopped in the grow place in Reno and we looked at pics I took. The man there suggested plants sometimes enter flower under stress or just based on strains. He did note some of the hairs on my plants were brown, a sign he said could be evidence of pollination! Now I am freaking out. I don’t think anyone near me has a male, but who knows.

I included a couple of the best pics I could get. Anyone have any ideas or knowledge they could pass on to me?

She is just strongly showing her sex…not quite in flower yet. Mine have a bunch of “pre-flowers” right now in Ohio…yours look a little ahead of mine.

What do you make of the stoppage in growth? Just this one. And are you saying she is lifting her skirt a bit???:joy:

Too hard to tell from the pics… need some closer-up shots, but I’d say female… you’ll find out later if it got pollinated. If so, nothing you can do now. We have neighbors on the hill that grow and I would have never known until someone said something.

Looks like that one was topped and some point, while the other one is more Christmas tree shaped…they tend to grow taller because there is only 1 apical (top) bud. No way to tell on the pollination until the bud starts to develop either with or without seeds.

If you’re in Nevada and plants are in the direct sun, maybe the pistils got burnt

You seeing anything that screams pollinated ?

It is a little hard to tell, could be swollen calyx (good thing) Squeeze those plump ones and see if you feel a seed forming. I have only had a few hermie seeds in my grow so I have not seen a lot of seed producing buds.

I busted one open, I am a bit confused on the difference between the bract and the calyexs. I found what looked the right part and it is empty. My pistils are mostly all white, a see a few that have darkened, but the whole thing is dark, whereas I read a pollinated females pistil will darken at the tips and the remainder will stay white.

I sent some photos to a buddy in CA who only does indoor grows and he said the plant looked pollinated. Suggested I pull it and bag it.

Thank you for the kind wisdom

I would not pull it. I do not see seeds forming in your dissection…but even if they are seeds…it wont get any worse by waiting or even harvesting…I’ve smoked some good weed that had seeds in my days.

My two cents

Last question today, what are your thoughts on thinning them out or lollipoping them? I have heard one school of thought, leave them. The other says to lollipop one they enter flowering and remove the bottom 1/3rd of the foliage.

I am a fan of lollipopping…at least some…especially outdoor plants…I usually do 15 - 30% of the plant. Humidity and moisture start to become an issue in flower. Opening up the bottom allows for good air flow and easier watering. Those lower branches will be shaded and will not produce as well as the upper buds in the light. Some people grow great stuff without lollipopping.

I am also a fan of trimming some of the interior shoots and leaves where again, the buds will not fully develop and can be larfy. It is also easier to keep an eye on the buds and look for bud rot when it is not so dense.

My two cents

Thank you. I really wish I had a mentor locally, however not ready to broadcast my grow

The calyx is a small gland inside the bract. The bract is often called calyx. You’ll start seeing a paleness inside them if they are pollinated.

It will form into the seed. I am not seeing that
