New Light Issue

Just bought a HLG 100 for my 2 x 2 x 4 grow tent, replacing my underwhelming Big Bloom. It says to hang it 12 inches min. from the top of the tent. I can run a fan on it if I want to hang it higher to protect from overheating.
At the recommended 24" from canopy veg stage it seems very do-able, but I don’t think I’ll be able to maintain 18" during flower, even with my normal LST.
Anyone have suggestions about this light, or lighting in a 2 x 2 x 4 grow tent?

You’re going to run into same issues with just about any light in a 4’ tall tent. It would probably be in your best interest to use training methods and keep your plant short and wide.

10 - 4. Thanks. I’ll do more research on LST and give it a shot.

I run my hlg 100’s 15 inches from canopy, 12 in flower. 4ft is tough, good luck man

Thanks for that info. 15 and 12 is def helpful. I’ll put some creative effort into my next LST. Understanding there would be a smaller yield - I’d like to try a 12 / 12 light cycle and see what happens. Maybe 5 weeks into veg would keep the plant(s) shorter?

I also figure you can get away with a few inches between top of tent and light, the driver and light don’t get very hot, place your hand above and see when its comfortable. I don’t know anything about LST, just keep in mind that they will double hight once they go into flower. If you run 12/12 they will go into flower automatically when they become of age, usually in 3 to 5 weeks. I am in taller closet and I just top once and flip at a certain hight.

Thanks, this is very helpful. I’m excited to set up the HLG.

No necessarily. A wide flat plant should outproduce a one stemmed vertical plant.

Agreed. My 2 grows using basic LST blew my mind. so many buds at same canopy level. I needed more space and better lighting, and everything else.
But I’m going to battle the 2 x 2 x 4 tent for a while. The challenge suits me at given time!

Did you get a dimmer with the hlg? Can place 1 in circuit if didnt. Would help a lot if cant achieve distance.

I was told that’s a no go
How you going about it??

This is what I was told…

I understand, I’m just not sure how to do that. If you were able to, it wouldn’t be as simple as just adding a potentiometer. Meanwell dimming drivers that are dimmable by resistance have a different circuit the pot is installed on. The models that don’t have the circuit aren’t dimmable by resistance. You could maybe get it to work with a triac, but meanwell doesn’t rate it for triac dimming,

All a dimmer is is a dialable resistor. Can place in line positive side to driver. Also check the driver for a dimmer under a rubber cap on side.a lot of meanwell can be turned down at driver.

Right on, my big drivers have the plugs, my 65 has nothing

I think hlg sells dimmer for their boards. Have to make sure driver can take it. I would callem.

Just looked up what theybstick with the 100. Not dimmable at driver. That bites. Have to look at all solutions…

I just got comfortable running at 100% and raising or lower as needed like HPS days before digital ballast

@StonedCold13 gonna ask my son when we chat. He will know for sure if can change either input or output. Pretty low tech for what he does for the Navy.
