New Grower Fun - Auto WW 2x2x4

Hey Folks! First time farmer, long time flower enthusiast here. Basically been using grok for any and all questions up to this point and figured I should get some real growers eyes on this bad girl to help me out. Sadly killed my first seed, she never made it out of the soil, but we’ve got seed number two rolling. I’ll post the setup, my progress and thoughts so far, along with a few questions I’ve got. I’m posting a lot of day by day pictures because its hard to find full day to day grow journals with good pictures and descriptions. So hopefully can help someone in my position a week or two ago

Setup: 2x2x4 AC Infinity full setup with the AI controller and Ionboard s22 light
Fox Farm Ocean Food in a five gallon fabric pot but only filled 3/5 the way
AC Infinity T3 humidifier
Using Kwik trip filtered jug water that seems to be balanced to 6.5-6.6, but I
check it to be sure everytime
ILGM WW auto Seeds

Conditions: Minnesota winter mid dec with outside temps anywhere from 30 to
negative 15 and extremely dry 30% humidity in my townhouse

Pre Treatment: Used ILGM’s root guardian and bug control with my pre watering for the soil and let it sit for a few hours before planting.

Germination — > NOV 30 —> Did the classic paper towel method, put two seeds in a Tupperware sandwiched between two moist paper towels. Put that bad boy in my furnace room where it sat in the dark nice and warm and I was rewarded two nice looking sprouts on Tuesday, Dec 2, two days later.

Planted one of them in my five gal setup and one of them in a small pot I filled with miracle gro (Wasn’t really planning to grow two and just germed two to be sure one worked, so dont hate me for that setup haha)

You can see I covered them both with domes to control humidity and temp the best I could, and I actually didn’t receive my humidifier till a week into the grow so these girls sat humidifierless the first 4-5 days. I sprayed the domes and gave the soil a very light spraying as well before closing the tent and waiting eagerly.

I have my Ionboard S22 at 19" away from soil, on max level power, as suggested by grok.

AI settings: Seedling mode - Used Ideal VPD for days 1-6 set it to 1.2-1.8 because i didn’t have a humidifier to maintain it any lower. The domes helped keep it lower in the seedlings environments though. After removing the humidity dome, I set the ideal VPD to 1.0-1.4 to help it adjust, and then after two days without the dome, changed the ideal VPD to .8-1.2rf

Two days later, Dec 4th, I wake up to my main girls seed barely pushing through soil and my backup girl in miracle gro, pushing through with green already

The next day rolls around and disaster strikes for my main girl. I open the tent to see her pushing through but the seed head still squeezing her, with one of her leaves looking pretty rough. I panic and try to pull the seed head off, effectively pulling my entire plant with roots out of the soil for a moment and then quickly making a new hole and burying her back down again. Figured I had just killed her but closed the tent back up and prayed.

Surprise, she survived and actually looked pretty good the next morning, Dec 6. Green pushing through the seed head, still being squeezed but at least looking healthier, and I wasn’t about to rerip her out of the soil so I let her be for the next few days besides light spraying with ph 6.5 water and dome burping

Dec 6 - Day 4

Dec 7 - Day 5

Dec 8 - Day 6

Quick miracle gro small pot update, it basically stopped growing much after the first initial spurt so idk what happened but my main girl was looking decent at this point so I wasn’t too concerned and just let this one figure it out or die.

Dec 10 - Day 8 - Watered her 12 oz of 6.5PH water around the outside of her dome! I was beginning to get more and more concerned with the seed head and decided if it didn’t come off the next day, I was ripping that sucker off one way or another. Not sure why it made me so anxious but it just felt like it was hurting her.

Dec 11 - Day 9 - Yeah I did it, got the head off with barely any struggle. For anyone wondering, I just lightly grabbed the stem and then the seed and pulled. Definitely not recommending this method but that’s how I went about it. I tried softening it with water the days leading up to this but nothing was working. Also, after getting the seed head off, I decided to let her rip without the dome protecting her anymore.

Dec 13 - Day 11 - Seems to have liked the seed head being removed and is starting to grow like a weed

Dec 14 - Day 12 - Weeee MN is the coldest place in the states and has a wind chill of -30, no joke. My townhouse is struggling to heat enough and so I feel pressured to lower my light to keep her warm and end up very very slightly burning a section of her second true leaves. Super minor, but yeah it happened. Photo might be hard to tell but its a small 3-5 cm long yellow strip in the middle of the leaf. I moved the light back up the next morning after tearing up a bit

Dec 15 - Day 13 - She’s looking mighty fine to me and grok thinks its time to move her into veg mode, might be early at least I thought so, but groks the boss for this grow so veg mode we go. Ideal VPD goes to .8-1.2 and my humidifier starts using more water than I thought was possible to fight the 30% humidity outside the tent. She’s about 4" tall at this point and working on pushing out her second set of true leaves. Third set might be peaking through

Dec 16 - Day 14 - Woke up to her lookin good but leaning a bit, might be hard to see in the photo but it was enough to concern me. Gave her a slight pep talk and pushed the soil near her up to prop her slightly up. I rotated the pot 180 and let it go. Considered using a stake or something to prop her up but id rather her fight and grow her stem stronger. Third set of leaves definitely pushing through, second set getting bigger.

Dec 17 - Day 15 - Leans better, third set of leaves even bigger and second set looking nice.

Pretty happy overall with her, but I don’t have a ton of go off of other than my grok telling me how good of a grower I am so I am open to any and all advice! I still have my ionboard at 19", max power, my circ fan max is set to 2 for now to prevent her getting gusted like crazy. I water about 15-18 oz every 3-4 days or whenever the top soil is looking dry and I rotate the pot every 24 hrs.

Couple questions: currently planning to water her another 18oz on saturday/sunday and might start a small dosage of ILGMS veg nutes but if anyone could also help me decide one when to start giving her those, that would be great.
And what kind of LST should I plan to do to her if any and when? I’m limited in space in my tent because my filter and fan is inside so it cant get taller than 2-2.5 ft.

Also the second back up plant has somehow survived still and is maybe two inches tall with two sets of true leaves. Just been watering her and letting her buck to see what happens. I can upload photos eventually if she looks really funky.

Let me know your thoughts on my grow so far. I’ll keep updating this every few days and try to finish the whole journal for those who might find it useful in the future.

After spending time looking at others posts and comparing my girl to others, she seems small no? Like her stem and leaf size seem small compared to some other two weeks old plants that have very thick stems. My girl stems seems skinny

@MNQuincy Welcome to the Forum! Looks like you are off to a good start. I think she looks fine for this stage. I think she is ready for a light feed. I would also start watering to saturation and then letting the soil dry until the pot is light and repeat. She is big enough now to take a full watering.

@riskguy Thank you! Super pumped to have a community to talk with so I appreciate your response a ton. I hear you on the light feed, I’ll start that this weekend with her next watering. When you say water to saturation, any idea how much water roughly I should add to achieve that? I’m so paranoid about overwatering that I’m scared to add more than 20 oz right now haha. I used a full 12 qt FFOO soil bag for reference of how much soil is actually in there.

This is a great place to learn. Overwatering is not giving too much water at one time, it is giving water too often Cannabis like a wet / dry cycle. So you water until you have runoff from the bottom of the pot and then let it dry. For a dry 5 gallon pot, it can be about 1 1/2 gallons.

I just re-read the post. Are you using Fox Farm Ocean Forest soil? If so, you do not need to add any nutrients until about 4 weeks and then start with light feeds.

My two cents.

Ahhh that makes more sense. And that is why I’m glad I’m here, lots to learn

Yes, I’m using Fox Farm Ocean Forest soil. I’ve read a few different posts about that soil being “hot” and that I should probably wait another week or so till I add to it. I’m sure there’s gotta be a way to look at the plant and tell but I haven’t come across that yet besides if the leaves start to yellow, which I’d prefer to avoid that happening haha.

I’ll give her a good gallon of water this weekend and see if she thickens up. I probably can’t start any LST till her stems are thicker so hoping the water increase does the trick!

I would not do this. She doesn’t have the root system yet to absorb 1 gallon.

Agreed. Your plant needs maybe 2-3 cups worth of water applied slowly in circle around it.

I would also be more concerned with your temps right now than relative humidity. Even if vpd is perfect low leaf surface temps will significantly slow development. If you’re worried about light intensity being too high raise it up a little. You can also leave light on 24/7 to keep temps up.

I think you’re on the right track for the most part. Would not worry about any training right now. With low temps the last thing you would want to do is stunt your growth anymore. If she takes off for you and stays in veg you can bend the main stem over later and get a good shape to her.

As a Fox Farm soil user, Ocean Forrest Soil is pretty hot. Here is my own recommendation, and many FF users are doing it.

5 parts Ocean Forrest to 1 part Cocoloco.
Add 30% Perlite for better drainage.
This is the BOTTOM half of your pot.

The TOP HALF should be Fox Farm Happy Frog with 30% perlite added in.

Especially when you grow Auto Flowering plants.

The happy frog is such a better starter soil.

Only water with correct PH for the first 30 days Is all an Auto Flower needs in this combo.

Hope this helps!!!

Got it! I’ll stick with the lighter watering schedule for now. As far as temps go, I’ve been struggling to keep the tent higher than 72-74 most the time when the lights are on. I’ve been using a heater on the outside to push the temps to 75-77 but I’d prefer not to run the heater 24/7. Is the 72-74 too cold or will I just see slower growth without temps being closer to the 80s? Debating buying ACI’s heater but not sure if its essential or not. Hope you’re somewhere warmer than me because its freezinggg today!

Hello fellow FF farmer! I’ll have to remember that soil mixture for my next grow. I was so excited to get this one going and grok recommended the Ocean Food so I just went with it. I’m already thinking of how to improve my soil for the next grow. I ordered some coco from ACI to try as well in the future because I’ve read good things about that stuff. Thank you for the advice!!

I’ve never done full on COCO or Hydro.
I JUST started this new blend with all 3 soils from Fox Farm.
Sooooo…I had one grow before this one, which was Titan F1 and Milky Way F1 in this mix, and I can see a difference in veg for sure.
Theses autos took the F off and just grew crazy fast.
I stayed in veg on this Runtz for 36 days tho..
That’s a lil longer than average.

My next grow will be the same as far as soil.
The only thing I added this time, was Beastie Bloomz by Fox Farm.

I don’t know enough to rate it yet, but we’re in week 4 day 2 bloom.

Here’s what I’ve got.

Not the prettiest, but the buds are gorgeous

Absolute beaut ya got there, looking super sticky :evergreen_tree:

I ordered the starter kit from ILGM so I have their veg nutes on deck ready to use whenever I decide its time. I’ll have to look into the beastie bloomz for next run. So many nutrient options, its overwhelming for someone who has no idea what’s actually needed

Okay, maybe stick with the same line for it all
Don’t use Beastie Bloomz if your not using the Fox Farm Trio, because it’s gotta be dialed in just right, as FF is a naturally HOT nute line.
Use your nutes from ILGM and order their bloom stuff too.
Keep it simple on ur first few,
That’s what I was told.
And it works for me.
Maybe it’ll help you out a lil too!
Glad it here
I just ordered White Rhino Auto and Blueberry.
Next run:

  1. White Rhino Auto
  2. Blueberry Auto
  3. Royal Runtz Auto
  4. Blue Cheese Auto
And that’s all gonna be under a 100 w light because I’m about to prove to some folks on another platform that my 100 w light will do it.
They say no, I say bs.
    So that’s my next one

The ideal canopy temps when growing with led lights is low 80’s. I don’t blame you for not wanting to run heater, I don’t use one either. But yes, if you get much below 80⁰ you’ll start noticing plants are a little slower. There’s no other immediate concerns with being a little low though, you just want to try and limit where you’re having issues and the severity of each within your control.

So would the investment into the ACI heater be something I should consider if I plan to grow through future Minnesota winters? I’m trying not to buy every little thing that might improve my grow until I actually finish my first grow, but my temps with lights off get as low as 61-62 and I know that cant be good so I might just pull the trigger. The other option would be upgrading the ionboard s22 light I’m using but I’m not sure that a 150 or 200 w light would heat the tent enough compared to an actual heater.

Also side question, I see you are a moderator so maybe you know the answer, how many messages per day is a new account allowed? I got cut off yesterday and was patiently waiting till noon today to be set free haha

To me, the question is more about paying to operate a heater than it is buying a heater. I grow in my basement and temps are type lower than ideal even in summer months. I have heaters just refuse to use them due to the increased cost of operation. That being said, I kind of expect to not have the fastest highest yielding grows due to my unwillingness to throw a bunch of money at my grows. Merely coming from the perspective of I could probably just buy weed instead of spending a ridiculous amount of money growing it. You have to look at your goals and see where things line up for you to make the best decision on how to move forward.

I’m not sure what the exact settings are at for post count but I do know that it shouldn’t take long to advance to next trust level and not have to worry about it. Make sure you check out some other topics and use up your “likes” and should be taken care of within a few days.

Insightful answer friend. My main goal is growing quality flavorful flower, less concerned with quantity. Just want to grow something to be proud of. I’ll stick it out with my lower temps for now and hope the White Widow strain is as resistant to cold as I’ve read. I’m in this growing thing for the long run so it’ll be a good learning experience and fun to look back on as I progress my setup :flexed_biceps:

Have never grown it.
But I smoked some that a guy in West Texas grew.
That is a tasty strain

Dec 19 - Day 17 - 5.25” tall with my ionboard s22 18-19” away at max power. Circ fan at 3 power, temps lights on at 72-75, lights off 62-65.

Also decided to transplant my other struggling miracle gro baby into some happy frog/ocean forest mix and a bigger pot so we’ll see how it fares the transplant
