Just about every strain I have tried tend to have 3-4 inches between leaf clusters. I see others with short plants that are bushy and lush, mine seem to always (whether sun or artificial light) to be tall and thin. Comments ?

Generally long internodal length if from lack of light, the plant is stretching to get more. Topping causing a plant to grow their side branches to become more bushy.

Welcome back to the game by the way
Hey @TimK
I think @Riskguy hit the nail on the head. If it’s a cannabis plant and it’s leggy then usually it’s the ppfd lacking.
What light fixture and how far to the canopy is the light?
Most manufacturers have specs for the fixture.
Here’s one for my light.
In a 4x4 tent I’d start at 24” then let the plants grow to the light. When I get ready to flip to 12x12 photoperiod I adjust my lights to 24” to canopy and watch for any stretching during early flower( first 2-3 weeks) after starting 12x12 photoperiod. Usually they stretch and I adjust to 12” inches after stretch.
I also lay down a trellis to begin the 12x12 photoperiod and try to level out my canopy making it as even as possible with the edge of my canopy a bit higher.
If you have a ppfd map from your manufacturer you can use it to adjust the intensity by either moving the light closer to the canopy or/and adjusting the intensity. If you have no way to adjust the light intensity you will need to move it closer to the canopy.
If you have no map you can try moving the light a few millimeters per day. Closely watch your plant for any leave curl or drying out at the edges each day.
