From todays bowl trimmings, no extras thrown in. Going to add it to the pill bottle. Also ordered and used a small 2 gram hash press to make a 1 gram hash button as an experiment. Crazy fun already.
morning growmie… I know a lot of growers seem to like having all that kief that comes from the trimmer bowl but I would rather have that stay on the bud so I hand trim mine… just something to consider if you have not…
Hey @Retiredoldguy , I’ve traditionally done a hand trim before, the bowl trimmer is definitely new for me. But the kief didn’t actually come from the trimmer itself, but from taking what was trimmed off and rubbing it over the 150 micron screen on the lap sifter:
It would have produced the same end product if I had hand trimmed and used all the sugar leaves and trim over the screen or if I bowl trimmed and then dumped that over the screen. I’ve used the hand trim leftovers before to make cannabutter and infused MCT Coconut oil. But this is the first time using a large sifting screen to try. Hope that clarifies it. Thanks.
morning Darran… Ok I see how you collected now thanks for sharing… I would not have thought you would get that much from the trimmed leaves…learned something new today…
It surprised me too! Shocked even. And then it was mentioned somewhere that even after screening the kief off, that you can still use the leftover, sifted, plant matter and it will still be good for decarbing, making cannabutter and oils, put it in brownies, etc…
Haven’t tried it myself, I’ve just been putting the sifted shake into the composter. I thought it would lose most/all potency by sifting it. But since this is a new road on this part of the adventure, I’ll try it and report back
Ah yep mine all gets used up until there is nothing but a oily wad of weed left, hoping for a good amount of Kief this outdoor grow to make some temple balls up
Awww, that hits the nostalgia button. Best hash that I ever had was authentic Nepalese Temple Ball hash. Way back in the late 70’s early 80’s. Way before airports and airlines were as invasive in their searches. Had a buddy who went for 3-4 weeks and brought some back. Would only sell me a little, but would smoke his when he came over. Strangely enough, it always struck me as the flavor profile reminiscent of A1-Steak Sauce. Best way I could describe it was like Black Lebanese Hash with a teaspoon of A1 in each ball. My buddy brought back 6 total and it was consistently the same across all of them.
I miss the days of the 70’s and early 80’s hash and opium it all dried up fast here in the day and hard to find. I did a big score of Opium from a few fellas from Holland at a Quite Riot concert in the Mid 80’s
Wow, thats pretty cool. Would love to have a little of that, grow some of the Oh-My-Thai autoflower seeds that I bought from ILGM, and then wrap my own faux opiated Thai stick.
Now that harvest is over and processing is almost done, I’ll start working on screening the trim for kief and making 3-gram hash bars. Pictures hopefully later today. Have a great day everyone.
Well, as promised, I did the hash press thing from the kief that I had. I still have a whole pound of trim that I have to screen for even more kief after getting done with this part of the project.
Each hash bar is a little over 3-grams. Tried to make each one 3.1 grams just in case. But, as the title of this post says “I got a thing, so I did a thing.”
Picture of my pill bottle with 3 bars already pressed in it. You can see the aluminum press, some parchment paper, the scale, and the weight of the one I just pressed. Using a 4-inch “C”-clamp to apply pressure for a few minutes to make the bars.
Had enough kief left to do another 1 or 2, but I was tired at that point. To think that I still have another pound of trimmings to sift and do this all over again…sigh!
I didn’t realize it was that easy. Seems the hash I used to buy back in the 70’s was really dark colored and kind of gummy/sticky. That looks really dry. When you get some to smoke does it fall apart? Where did you get the press from? I have big C clamps already.
Hey @Mucluc , the press is made of aluminum and measures about 1.5x1.5 inches. I got it off of Amazon, it was like $20.
The kief is pretty loose so I can get about 2 grams in it with the bottom piece on it before having to lightly compress it with just my hand strength to make enough room to get the 3rd gram in it. Then I put the top on it, press a little with my hand and then put the 4 inch “C”-clamp on. I then do a light tighten, wait a couple of minutes, then tighten down pretty good on it, let it sit another couple of minutes and then tighten again another 1/8th to 1/4 turn. Couple of more minutes and then unclamp it to remove the bar. If you are using just fine strained kief (150 micron or smaller) you don’t have to use any heat. I believe it’s the heat that makes it darker, but I’m still experimenting with it myself. From what I have researched so far, once it’s clamped up, you but it in a heated place (oven, smoker, etc…) at roughly 185-200 degrees for 20-30 minutes. Then, using gloves, pull it out and tighten again. Let it cool completely and then unclamp it to remove the bar. It’s supposed to be much darker like the old Black Lebanese instead of the Blond Lebanese that it currently looks like.
If you are not screening it to 150 micron or smaller, you will get more plant matter mixed in with the trichomes and you will need to use heat to keep it fused together. At least that seems to be the current consensus on-line. I’ll be trying it this weekend and will report back to the group.
Couple of things I’ve learned so far. I use little cut outs of parchment paper on the upper and lower press pieces between the aluminum and the kief. It keeps it from sticking or leaving part of itself on the press pieces. On the main inside body of the press, I use just a fingertip of olive oil to coat the inside and then lightly wipe away any excess to help get the bar out of the press. Just needs a super light coating, but it does help in removal of the bars once pressed. I imagine that it will be even more helpful in removing the bars once I try the heat method.
As far as using the bars, I can break pieces off, but it is really easy to use a razor blade to cut off small pieces or take some shavings off. I might try a microplane grater from the kitchen to see how that works this weekend too. Such a fun experiment. Hope that helps.
That is awesome I want to try to do this one day. So how do you smoke the hash? I know you can put it in a joint or on a bowl or whatever don’t people use butter knives? How else can it be smoked I really want to give this a try
