I ordered a 35 pint GE dehumidifier to decrease the humidity in my lung room. I didn’t get a chance to get it going until after midnight. Long story short it should be around 73° in my tent right now and it got up to 83 with the dehumidifier running. It was on for less than an hour. I checked everything else and nothing is putting off abnormal heat. The dehumidifier is blowing out really hot air.
I turned it off and set it outside the room. Is it normal for a dehumidifier to put off that much heat? If it’s going to be that hot in the room I’ll have to start adding humidity so there’s no point in having the dehumidifier.
It is. Dehumidifiers have 2 coils in them (a cooled coil and a heated coil.) It takes energy (heat) for the machine to perform both processes to extract moisture out of the air.
Yeah I agree, it’s normal. My dehumidifier raises my room temp by 4 to 8F also. It really is a paradox cause flowering plants like lower temps and low humidity, but then to lower humidity with a dehumidifier, you’re raising temps.
Thanks for the replies. Probably going to return the dehumidifier and focus on good air flow. I put the dehumidifier at the top of the stairs and opened the door just to see how it would do. Filled up the tank while I was asleep, so in five hours at most. Never had a measurable impact on humidity up there. There’s no beating heat or humidity here this time of year. Guess on the bright side I can actually get some good oscillating tent fans and have money left over from the return.
I use a dehumidifier in my lung room as well. The dehumidifier cools the air removing the moisture then the condenser reheats the air but the extra heat comes from the heat of compression added by the compressor. When using my dehumidifier i also run a portable ac unit to keep the space cool. Its just part of the process. But my results are always impressive.
I got my situation lined out. Put the dehumidifier by the bannister at the top of the stairs, put the carbon filter on the exhaust fan, opened the bedroom door and it’s good to go. The extra heat dissipates into the big open area over the stairs (I guess) and the humidity in the bedroom and tent are under control.
Looks like I’m gonna have to keep the dehumidifier set about 5% under where I want the tent. Also got a better thermometer and hygrometer while I was out today.
Perhaps you had it on continuous run? If so try setting it for your intended RH, and try it. My 70 pint doesn’t bring the heat up in my tests, but my lung room is almost 100 sq ft.
i have a GE i use in the basement and when i walk in there it feels hot. so yes its normal. gonna increase room temp like 10 degrees. under my house is a dug out they made it with dynamite into a mountain. should be cool 50 under there yr round. but its warm like 70-75ish bc of the DH. i pull 5 gal of water a day with that DH under there.
