I’m going to look for a dehumidifier today and was curious about a couple things. My tent is set up in a bedroom. Can I put the dehumidifier outside the tent instead of inside? Currently I’ve got an exhaust fan and just use the flaps on the tent for intake. I know some people humidify the room so I’m assuming the same can work in reverse. My humidity stays around 50-55% so I really only need to drop it a little to get closer to 45%. My other issue is I can’t afford a fancy dehumidifier with settings etc as I can’t find one less than $100+ so I’ve been thinking maybe get a timer and just monitor for a day to see how long and in what intervals I have to run it in to maintain a lower RH. Going to go ahead and pick up some string to tie off buds for support while I’m out in hopes of bud weight being an issue soon lol. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Save up and purchase the largest one you can. I have a 70 pint version that can barely keep up. (Well I have kids… in and out in and out)
Works the same though, you want to dehumidify the room next to it, or the whole house. Dehumidifiers put out a bit of heat, so keep that in mind when placing it near a tent. I have mine blowing near the air conditioner sucking up the heat, and drier air to cool down before circulating through the entire house. You set up may vary.
what @Covertgrower said…I have mine inside my tent since it is quite old but still works but I check on my plants like 7 times a day during lights on and will kick it on for a bit but have to make sure that I shut it back off after I get the RH down…having inside the tent raises tent temperature without a doubt and my only suggestion would be to make sure you are exhausting all exhaust vents to the outside or another room at the very least because you dont want to pull the same air right back into your tent. I supplemented my tent with a diy CO2 bucket to help with temps and give it just alittle boost in CO2 only cost me like ten bucks to make it with some yeast and alittle cereal to feed the yeast and added an air pump to it to push the CO2 to an air bar above my plants since CO2 is heavier than oxygen…I have not had any bleaching ect…
@Covertgrower @GreenFlex the plan in my head was to place it semi close to one of the intake flaps and I’m thinking I need to drop it 5% to 10% to be optimal. I suspect this will break down to it needing to run for a little while every 2-3 hours to maintain it. I was fortunate in veg as I’m in a very humid area and raising it was never an issue. I can place it near a flap and still have it close to the doorway which keeps cool air flowing into the room. Does that sound like a good starting place for me?
Did you decide on a certain style of Dehu? I guess my question is do you have ducting with it or is it a stand alone? The answer to this will determine placement ideally
@GreenFlex no I’m researching currently. It’s a 3x3 tent and budget is an issue at the moment so I’m looking at just basic ass dehumidifiers to be honest. I think I will be having to dump it a couple of times a day but I’d rather do that then risk bud rot. It’s probably going to have to be a cheaper model regardless of what I get.
I have never worried about humidity in my tent. Zero bud rot.
I understand this, but it’s not the best version. If you have an exhaust fan in there it’s sucking that dry air right out. And, you’re putting excess heat into the tent.
I would just set in the same room or the next room over. I wouldn’t directly into the tent.

makes sense tho, I hadn’t considered that. In my mind the smaller dehumidifier was going to need to be closer but looking at it from a less stoned mind, the area needing the dehumidified is relatively small, therefore it doesn’t need to be so close. Dehumidify the room and the humidity in the tent drops as well. Thanks for the advice man.
@MrPeat I don’t know what it is, you break all the growing rules and churn out Bigfoot monsters lol. What is your average humidity range in your grows? Mine fluctuates of course but overall it’s 50-55% and I don’t think I’ve had any issues from that so far. I’m just stressing budrot mostly.
I have the old style that has a reservoir that needs to be dumped…no biggie it will work I don’t know where you reside but I am an AVID yard-sale/goodwill/salvation army/craigslist/someone else’s trash connoisseur. I believe that we just gotta work with what we can manage…and Yes run that Dehumidifier in the the room next to your tent and will lower moisture that is being pulled into your tent! @Covertgrower will not steer you wrong!!
I use a 90 pint unit to keep my entire basement at a low rh. It acts as a lung room for the grow area.
Dehumidifiers will put out heat, and need to be emptied or drained. More expensive ones have a pump.
Honestly I do some of my best thinking, I also prefer creative strains. But yeah, sounds like you got that covered now, lol.
If the humidity isn’t too out of control, you can bring it down through defoliation of fan leaves.
IMHO, the best dehumidifier is a ductless mini-split. You can dehumidify and regulate temperature at the same time while saving money. It also provides heat, when that becomes necessary. The upfront costs and installation disruptions are big drawbacks though.
I have a backup dehumidifier in my basement, and it’s plumbed to a drain. I never have to empty it out.
I don’t think that’s the best idea to control humidity… just saying…
I wouldn’t suggest that it’s the best method, but it can help and it’s one of the few reasons I will defoliate.
