Help w/trimming

I have a few plants with OVERLY large fan leaves, is it ok to cut them off so the rest of the plant and others around them can get more and better light??

I tend to defoliate all the way up until flowering. Give them a good trim.
I pick a mid sized leaf and remove every leaf that is larger.

Nice looking plant…

Of course! Big leafing sjould be done quite often. Also pull off any dead or dying leafs. I sure someone will post a few photos of thinning up the base. If not than I will chime back in in a few days.

Awesome, thanks for the advice. Ive trimmed all the lower leaves, i just wasnt sure about the giant ones closer to the top, i dont wanna kill or stress them out to much. Maybe you can post a pic of what they should look like after trimming.

I tend to leave more leafs on durring my home grow. I feel like thay act as little solar panles. Soking up the suns rays. But… renoving a few of the large fan leafs allowes the bud sites to get more light.
I also like to thin from the start of the grow to the end. I feel like this causes less stress on the plant. I dought it even knows she’s getting thinned.
I will post a few more pics next week.

WOW dude beautiful grow!! This only my second time growing, im still shaky on alot of things, but im getting more confident! This forum helps alot, the people here are great!
Thank you so much for the advice and pics!

@PharmerBob I’m new to growing also, I’ve been lightly pruning my plant for the last few weeks, I usually wait til a watering or feeding day, and I trim a little bit off as far as leaves covering sites, or sucking energy from other sites. I am wondering what it means when people say to “lollipop”. Idk what it means exactly

Well it used to mean cutting away all growth up to last nodes at end of branches.

Now I dial it back a bit and I remove the branches that are unnecessary but leave the fan leaf that feeds it

You can see here I’ve cut off the branches that would pull emergent away from main colas but left the first fan leaf that is directly below it

This is to train the plant to only produce one large flower at the end of the branch, reduce branches as necessary or whatever you feel comfortable with

I used to do this

Energy……

Hey man, how much of a yield do you get from plants like that?

About 8lbs from 12 plants give or take a bit

That’s pretty extreme @PharmerBob, good for experinced growers with dialed in climates however I do worried new growers would struggle doing this successfully.

Lolipop and defoilation at 2nd or 3rd week of flower is what I do.
Because I don’t plant train, no need to strip biomass in veg while it’s all carrying out the job of making the plant bigger and stronger, faster.

Sorry I believe your mistaken in what I was trying to say.

More of a branch training method I started using just recently, I’m not sure if anyone else is but it’s a mix of Schwazzing with leaving enough leaves to bounce back without issues…

It’s to cut the actual branch’s that are starting to grow off your mains to limit energy used by the plant.

In this method you will be leaving fans from start of branches but rerouting all growth to just those ends

As you can see she still has plenty of leaves to grow with but I’ve “lollipopped” the growth to just the ends of the branches I wish to take to flower

What ever works for you stick with it. People have told me my plants are alittle bushy while in mid veg. I think thay like the extra greenery.
I do feel like one needs to thin to allows for light penetration and airflow.
I feel like i simply try to make the plant look healthy and happy. If I see a few lowers that will not produce anything besides a long skinny branch with .1g of larf. I chop it off!
When the time comes toy will know what needs ro come off.
Listen to the plant. She will tell you what needs to be done.

Are big leafs shading a huge amount of bud sites? Do some big leafing.
Are the lower branches getting no light? Chop them off.
Are there dead brown leafs within the plant? Remove them all.
Do you see any leafs that look week that bugs would enjoy to munch on? Cut them off.

Happy growing…
