Grow Style and Pot Size Help

Hey Guys,

So the strain im going to be growing is an indica dominant photo “compact plant” from ILGM (Strawberry Kush CBD) that says will grow to just under 3ft (90cm)
I have been reading that as a general rule of thumb you should allow a plant enough space to double in its size from veg to flower and that also you should not switch to flower until at least 3-4 weeks so it has a good root system… My confusion is as follows.

My Grow Tent is a discreet 155cm tall, 40X40 wide. As I will have a hanging LED setup it looks as though the bottom of the light will hang about 30cm below the top of the tent giving me a clearance of about 125cm. The recommended clearance of light to plant is 60cm for this light.
My pot will be 25cm high (thinking 3 gallon fabric pot) giving me a plant working space of 40cm.

Therefore my strain will be too tall to let it grow to full size, giving that I have 40cm to play with should I switch the plant to flower when it reaches 15-20cm…
Does this seem right to you guys?? I sketched a drawing to have a look

Or does this mean I go say 4 - 1 or 2 gallon pots (SOG) and flip them earlier???
Or can I do LST and topping with one plant in a 7 gallon pot and try and keep it short as possible??

Thanks for the help guys

You can always go 12/12 from seed and they’ll flower as soon as they’re able to.
Otherwise veg as long as you want, but tie them down to do low stress training. Or you can super crop the branches.

Don’t try and do this after it’s hardened off in flower. They snap, they don’t bend anymore.

If you do a 12/12 start to finish they generally start flowering between 30 to 45 days. No real stretch as the 12/12 works better on quality lights like HLG.

You can still grow with a subpar light but your crop will suffer with not enough light. Been there, done that on my Viparspectra PAR600 light.

That’s why I top all my plants, keeps their height way down.

If mine get to big and they always do I will start to grow parts of the plant horizontally. You have to get creative if you love growing monsters.

Regardless of size of your plant, it won’t flower until its mature enough, that’s why you see +/- 4 weeks recommended before flipping.

As small as your space is, you should probably try with one plant and maybe a screen to train plants to specific canopy height. If you wanted to go sog style, would make a lot more sense to do so with clones that you could get into flower quickly.

Thanks for your help @Covertgrower @MrPeat @Hellraiser @dbrn32

ILGM description says They grow into compact sized plants with bountiful branches and dense buds.
For the best outcome, try a Sea of Green (SOG) growing technique when growing Strawberry Kush CBD indoors.

As this is will be my very first grow and listening to your advice I might just do the one plant…
If I top the plant and do LST within the first 30 days of veg is it possible to keep the plant at a small height say (20-30 cm)… do you think a 3 gallon/ 5 gallon or 7 gallon pot??

As this is my first grow am i better off just keeping it really simple and just flipping early and maybe topping to not get overwhelmed?

Thanks for the advice guys

3 gallon is probably plenty. Figure you’re only going to have something like 4 or so inches from your pot edges to walls, so it will fill up pretty quickly once plant catches its stride.

Are you familiar with scrog (screen of green), in which plant is trained to trellis over the top? Pretty simple, and probably the easiest way to set your canopy height. Whenever anything grows through it, you just push back down underneath. As your spaces get close to full you flip to flower. Outside of pushing growth beneath the other maintenance is cleaning up growth below canopy. It’s not my favorite method, but easy way for beginner to keep canopy heights in check and get good yield.

Hi @dbrn32,

I have looked into SCROG … but not completely familiar with the setup…

would i place the trellis at the height i want before flowering e.g 25cm above the pot… then guide the branches through the holes… once a branch is through a hole then feed back down through another hole?
what size trellis holes do you recommend?
does scrog extend the veg time by much, I would like veg time to be about 30 days
would I still Top the plant

thanks

I would weave it through the net or anything like that. I would actually do the opposite and keep everything below it. When you get something above just tuck it under the closest piece of net. You could probably even remove the net once you have plant trained the way you want it.

You will have to expect the plant to extend a little above it through transition though. A large scrog would extend veg time. But your plant should just about fill your space naturally on 30 day veg. The screen merely there to help keep canopy even.

I just saw a tutorial where the grower topped his plant to give it a 4 way branch then used the screen to fill out his grow horizontally… looks good

I knew I should of just stuck with an auto for first time grow :expressionless:

Thanks again mate

Nah, you’ll be fine. Autos can be a little tricky for new grower. A little hiccup can stunt it and send it to flower at only a few inches tall, and that’s no fun. With a photo you can always veg a little longer if need be. Once you learn the ups and downs of your space and have your techniques solid, then maybe try an auto.

Thanks @dbrn32

Any tips on how to actually water the plant properly if under a SCROG that ony sits 15cm above the Pot??

Cheers

Watering can with small spout?

Maybe im over thinking it … but if im adding nutes into the soil in a watering can through a hole in the scrog net and trying to miss the plant and only get into the pot…
Thought there may be some grower gadget lol

cheers

Maybe I need to make it portable on wheels where the pot can sit on a caddy to be able to rotate it around If need be?
