How do I keep gnats out of the soil?
Hydrogen peroxide and “NO ebay links allowed. Amazon links, OK!” DE+Earth+food+grade. Sprinckle the FOOD GRADE DE on the soil and your plants. Google peroxide and cannabis to get the correct mix but i think its like a tablespoon per gallon my man @ktreez420 might bless your head with some pertinent knowledge. Hes got a good soul and and hes a good somebody
BTW they sale the DE dust at Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes. Make sure to get food grade. DO NOT get pool filter grade DE , toxix to humans
I have tried everything for months and I still have them. You really can only control them. One thing that helps is the HP and it is one part per 4 parts water (I think), yellow sticky cards and small bowls filled with 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and a dash of liquid soap. Place the small bowls in each pot and replace daily. Also, mosquito bits mixed in the soil helps. I hate them. Prevention is the only way to avoid them.
Yo @ktreez420 what is your suggestion for this gnat situation?
I’m using DE Food Grade outside and it’s magic.
Well honestly, the best solution is to get rid of the soil you’re using, but because there’s plants growing in your soil we can’t really do that haha!
I had such a problem getting rid of them. At the time I didn’t know about DE, so I didn’t know to use it! I started with using the sticky fly traps and hanging them around. I made jars of vinegar to trap them, jars of soap water, etc. but they were still flying around. Then I learned you can put sand on top of your soil, to block the gnats from being able to get into your soil. The gnats are around because they love moist soil. After using the traps, jars, and sand, I went above and beyond lol and decided to buy Lady Bugs. They eat most little pests, and I believe they’re good luck, so I bought 300 on Amazon, and let them free in my grow room. It was so cool to watch them fly around from leaf to leaf, eating those damn gnats like a buffet! Very peaceful and calming. It was like the Lady bugs were saying, “it’s ok man, we got this!” Now, being that my grow room is a secluded basement, I wasn’t worried of the bugs going through my house. None did, but if they happened to I wouldn’t care, they’re cool with me lol. In the end, I had no lady bugs, and no gnats. Everyone died or was eaten lol.
So my recommendation, use sand on top of soil, then DE, and make sure you clean your grow area up after spills or anything like that. I’d also recommend hanging the sticky fly traps around as well, they really do grab a lot of the gnats. But be careful if you do use the fly traps because they will stick to EVERYTHING lol!
After all of this, is was a huge red flag to me that I should try hydro growing. No soil, no bugs. And wow, no bugs is amazing lol. I hope I have helped you @RKIP, if you have questions on anything more just ask away! This place is full of great people who can help you with basically anything you need help with lol.
@4play that means a lot! Thank you for the shout out brother! Good vibes all day, always
Awesome response bro! I gotta get me some of dem dare buckets lol ya those trees your growing had me growlin and druelin this morning. Ya i plan on going to the hydro buckets after i use up these 2 bags of happy frog i would just jump ahead but i hate to see that 50 bucks of aoil go to waste. Ya i will be trying the sand on top of the soil when i transpant in a few days
Try a soil grow side by side of a 1 bucket DWC grow. That’s how I started too. I was scared lol and didn’t know if I had what it takes to grow in hydro. I was worried that since my soil grows sucked, how could I possibly grow successfully in hydro?!
Well !@#$ that, lol because if you want to do something, you can do it! Any one of us!
Sand doesn’t let the soil/medium breath

So do the gnats hurt the plants? Mine are outside.
The gnats themselves won’t hurt the plant. Their larvae, on the other hand, will feed on the roots which will hurt your yield.
Well, that’s not good. Thanks for the response. I’ve seen them wandering around in the pot…
They like rich, moist soil. There are a few things you can do. Food grade diatemaceous earth(DE) can be used, but will increase soil pH, so keep an eye on those readings at the root zone.
It’s been said that adding milk to your water is beneficial for the soil and may help control some pests.
I read somewhere on here that a couple inches of sand as a top covering may stop the gnats from thinking it’s a good nursery site. I’ll be trying the sand and milk this season.
The yellow sticky pads may catch some before they hit the soil to lay eggs. My luck, they would lay first and then hit the pad! Lol…not really funny, but what else can ya do?
Robert has more info on them in his blog articles. I passed it in a search for testing soil pH.
I forgot to mention that the fungus gnats article is older than the link I just gave you. I started from the oldest and worked backwards because I knew it was an older article.
It’s definitely moist. We had a bunch of rain recently. And it’s rich. Yes, I used,…wait for it…Miracle Gro. I now know I shouldn’t have, but…I’ll try the DE. I assume I just sprinkle it on top of the dirt? This particular girl has been in the pot for a month and I’m not inclined to transplant it… (Light of Jah auto-fem) Thanks for the info @FloridaSon!
another route to consider…nematodes
For diatomaceous earth, maybe something like this to help spread it
Excellent info @kabongster! I’m wondering, will the DE have any effect on the larvae, if in fact they’re there? Just ordered a bag of todes as well as the DE.
spread on the soil, it will get watered in…D.E. losses effectiveness wet but regains it after drying out so it will kill larvae.
potato wedges on the soil are recommended, too…the larvae love them, just replace the wedges in a few days and use yellow sticky pads for the flies.
I sell Food Grade DE!
