Good morning everyone I am curious how different folks germinate their beans. I grew up taught by my dad the paper towel method but since ive started growing have foumd multiple ways to germinate. Whats been currently working for me is a mixture of 10 parts water 1 part 3% Hydrogen peroxide soaking for 24 hrs and then placing in paper towel with ziplock. Im hearing different methods from ILGM and i want to know the best successful method with these beans as i do not want to lose any and have to have them replaced.
Anybody and anyone feel free to share how you approach this subject. Any info will be greatly appreciated @Bentstick @Flitme @Lightbrightt2010 @Low
Drop in clean water. Thump it down, sinks to bottom. 1-2 days tail pops out. 1/4" dent in soil. Put in with tweezers tail down. Pops out in 24-36 hours.
Ok so question to both of you ,I have read they can drown so if this is true how do i prevent this and I appreciate the gast response because im preparing my soil for them at the moment and wanted to be ready for them when theyre ready to hit the dirt,i also have rooting cubes but have only used in cloning. Ive rrad some people plant in them
Im guessing that would be if you left it in the water too long with the tail out? Im always so dang anxious to get that sucker in the ground. Ive never had that issue but im gonna look into it.
Ok, curious.as why nobody uses hydrogen peroxide to aid in softening the shell and destroying any bad microbes. Everything ive read says this hos increase the germination rate alot
All i did was toss my seed in a jar of water until i saw a tail, waited until the tail was 1in long, and carefully put the seed (tail side down) into my grow bag. 2, maybe 3 days later i saw a sprout.
I know there’s better methods, but this one worked for me so…
I drop them in water for 2 to 3 days at most. Usually have a tail at that point. Put directly in soil under 24 hr light.
Only had 1 not come up out of the last year. Out of 20 ish seeds.
So as other growers jump in, may I add a sub question?
I’ve had a seed or three become filmy within a few hours of soak. With or without peroxide, in tap or distilled. Has anybody else experienced and what did you decide it was?
I use 75ºF water RO with a splash of Hydroperox. I only soak for 12 hours then I place in a paper towel and wet it with the water she was soaking in and in a ziploc with hot breath to make it like a balloon and then in a 80ºF cupboard for 12-18 hours and she usually has a 1/4" tail. Plant her fingernail depth in a small seedling pot, cover her with loose soil and into the super sprouter she goes.
The link above has my input in a seed germing thread with pics of what I just explained.
I don’t believe there is a right or wrong way within reason. With ILGM seeds, follow their germination guidelines to make sure if something does go wrong, you can request replacements. Some folks bypass the whole soaking-paper towel method and just drop the bean right into the pot. Others use rapid rooters, whatever works to get that tail!!
thx, im doing it the ILGM way incase i have an issue. Mixed my water 10 parts and 1 part h202. Will soak, they are now. Ive never had a seed sink before unless it was bad, mine are floating.
