Okay, i’m getting a little confused with some terms and have looked them up and i can’t get definitions to real life satisfied. Germinate is the first part when you put in water or towel, then put in peat pellet or other vehicle for first part of growth. it has two round leaves, then two serrated leaves next. When is a plant considered a seedling? when is the proper time to take the pellet and put in a solo cup to do the seedling stage? as my tent is absent without leave, what adlib light can i use to do seedlings. my girls popped out of pellet yesterday and it is 4 weeks until i get the tent. just looking for some type of mcgyver idea to get by the next 4 weeks.
As soon as that seed sprouts and has broken the shell. It’ll show the cotyledons-the first two leaves-shortly after and can technically be planted into whatever medium you are going to use. If you go with peat pellet remember to adjust the pH of the water that you soak it in. Once you see the roots starting to form a mass around the outside of the peat then you can plant into coco, soil, or even hydro! In the seedling stage you can use any light. Most go with flourscents but leds are affordable and popular choice these days. HID lights can be used but keep in mind they will need to be further away due to their intensity. I usually go with leds for seedlings that switch to an led and HPS combo to flower. Honestly, you can probably go with LEDs from seedling to harvest! A cheap way to substitute some cheap LEDs are to buy a flexible bedroom light stand from Walmart and a couple LED bulbs. Also, Home Depot sells flourescent strip lights for 20-30 bucks if you need an immediate solution!

thanks a bunch @BobbyCelo exactly what i was looking for, was getting myself confused, i’ll blame it on the new pot i’m smoking lol. and the light solution sounds like that will work. just got to get to the point that my tent gets here and then i will have a sunsystem 630 cmh with one 4200k bulb for veg, and two 3200k bulbs for flower.
Hey Monk, I feel your pain… I started my girls in one of these with a heat mat. I had a little trouble keeping the heat down but made it work. I put a simple temp and humidity gauge in there and managed to get it regulated. I bought one of these t5 lights (cool White is what you want for veg) from a local Menards in a pinch because I wasn’t prepared. I bought this cheap mylar from Menards too. I was going to make a “grow dome” for the girls until my tent arrived. The light worked fine. My tent arrived quickly so I didn’t make the hillbilly grow room but it would work in a pinch. The High Output flouresent worked fine while I was building my QB light. I’ll use the flouresent for clones later on. At least that’s the plan. I had them in the dome until about 10days old. Then removed the dome for a few days then put in 3gal pot about day 12. They could have stayed in the solo cups longer I think. Wish I would have put in 5 gal pots - maybe next time. That’s what I did. Hope it helps.
thanks a bunch @Verndoc oooo i just went to the “these” thing and i love that little tool lol thanks for the heads up bud.
I use the same little set up that verndoc uses and put a towel between the heat mat and seed tray so it doesn’t get too hot. I have used panda fabric and wrapped cheep shelving for a small veg room
I actually raised the tray up off of the mat with a couple 1" thick bricks i had laying around. Did the trick.
To answer your question… when they pop out of the dirt/coco/peat/rockwool you have a seedling. At least I think so, maybe.
@monkman …Anytime homie!

@BobbyCelo @dbrn32 how many of these lights should i get to hold me over for the month while plants are in peat pellets and then solo cups?
I have 5 available slots in the light fixture. right now i have 4 plants up, one of them an inch tall the rest a quarter inch still in peat. it looks like another month before my tent gets in, so i would like to use these bulbs for my 5 slot lamp or less if that is all i need, but i will need them to last for a month so consider that if needed more bulbs to cover the growth while in solos. i just hope i won’t need to transfer from solo’s before the month is out. The plants have been up for only a day and a half now, i would think the pellets will last for a week or maybe a bit more, then will put into solos when i see roots on pellets. then they need to last to mid march.
also, how far from the little tykes should i put these as i will be able to get these tomorrow i hope, right now using 5 sixty watt soft white led bulbs. 5000k 816lumins 9.8 watts
Eww don’t buy those!. If you have a multi bulb fixture that you’d loke to use, just fill it with cold white a19 or a21 bulbs you can remove diffusers from. Going a month with any type of bulb like that is going to be pushing it. But I would think you couget by couple of weeks anyway.
Also, Walmart isn’t currently on list of approved vendors. Could you please remove the link from your post? Thanks!
kk @dbrn32 removed, sorry!. so i should just stick with the 60 w soft white leds that are already in the light? that is the one that is 5000k 816lumins, 9.8 watts. i just thought a bulb with blue and red in it would be better. they only cost 7 bucks. there are others that i can get that are relatively cheap as i didn’t want to put in a bunch of money for this. my buddie has a single bulb t5 that he said i could use but i didn’t think that would be enough.
Single bulb t5 isn’t enough, but it may help with others. 5000k should be daylight not soft white, so double check that. That bulb is rather small too. Look specifically for a19 or a21 bulbs in something like 5000k or higher, then remove diffusers. They will be more like more 1600 lumens. A place like Walmart or big box home improvement store should sell them for less than $8 a bulb too. I think I was snagging 2 packs for $10 from a place like Menards for my garage.
If you look at the actual light spectrum of those bulbs they’re probably better for growing plants than any red blue led combo too.
ty bud @dbrn32
i just checked my girls and the ones that were 1/4 inch are now over half inch tall. two things struck me though, the coteldens? were curved under on all plants, and the leaves of coteldons were tiny, less than 1/4 inch. the pellets seem dry to me. should i just put water in the jiffy tray and let them soak from bottom, drip water to tops of pellets, or just spray? i think they need water in other words, the pellets are light brown on top and don’t feel soggy when squeezed a little bit. the coteldons and the first of the serrated leaves are the only two leaves up, the serrated ones are approx 1/16 of an inch.
i am sincerely thinking of dumping them and starting over in a week or two when i can count on my tent being in. but i hate to give up the 20 days or so of the start. but if the plants are going to be dwarfed i don’t want to keep wasting time on them… i do realize they are only a couple days old and i would not pull them until i was ready to start the new germs that would fit timing better for tent.
everything i see says to take dome off when plants are above ground. i know the humidity is very low which is where i think most of the water went that was in tray. i’m not going to be able to do anything about the humidity until i get the tent going. the room is huge.
Not sure where it says to take domes off. I would mist them and put domes back on.
kk will do, thanks again @dbrn32 i will look at the bulbs and see if i can get the thing off that i think u mean by diffuser… and i took the numbers off the bulb itself so it is not a soft white it is as you said a day light bulb… i remember now i got those to try to get a situation to make it possible for mom to read, she was an English teacher and really misses her books, we think we might have her talked into audio books.
If you go to store to buy them, inconspicuously pull one out of package. If you can twist the globe on base it will pop off with a little prying. If the globe won’t spin, it will likely need to be cut off. There’s some YouTube videos on this i think.
yes, the ones i have in now i looked at and it looks like you have to cut them off. but i will figure that one out… i think you might have seen me mention that tools and i are not compadres lol. i will try to do it without destroying bulb or me
They should be plastic. I would assume could be done with a utility knife and some caution.
hey @dbrn32 just back from shopping trip, spent 100 bucks on bs but got 5 A21 100 w 1500 lumins bulbs to replace the ones i got in now. these don’t have a “add-on” deffuser . it is just a bulb. so i called my guys at treehouse and asked how close i should put these and he said 3 ft. i have the bulbs i’m using now within 6 inches of plants. should i put it at a couple of feet and then lower them when i get more leaves on? @BobbyCelo @MattyBear
