Germination Questions Fool Proof

So this is my first grow … With that there has been a lot of time and $$$ dedicated to this project…

With that i have read many so many theories on germination and the processes there in all of them are somewhat complete but i have questions…

I am opting to go with the water method first drop the beans to soak then move to rapid rooters then under cfl until ready for transplant.

My questions start from beginning i have read that you drop them in water and wait 24 hours???

some say 24 - 72 hours ???

Some say until they drop and don’t float???

So when do you transfer to rapid rooter pods??? Do you need to see a tail or what have you

if anyone has a fool proof technique that they could share in dummy down terms I would definitely appreciate it!!!

THANKS!!!

I use a shot glass with distilled water and add about a capful of hydrogen peroxide. Place in a warm, dark place and typically within 24hr they sprout tails. I drop mine in soil when the tail is about 1/4” long. None of my seeds have ever sunk so I don’t think there’s anything to the sinking/floating thing.

I personally go the old shot glass of water for 24/36 hours max usually you’ll see a bit of a crack or tail forming, then in wet paper towel wrung out and into a ziplock bag that I pillow with my dragon breath as I close it. It usually goes behind the tv for another 24/48hrs, I check it randomly but every 6 or so hours after a day or so and she’ll tail. As soon as I can see the tail saying hello i put it in a plastic cup or old seedling pot with some potting mix, the shot glass of water goes in on top of the seed and then I dome her with the bottom of a coke bottle. 100% sprout rate so far and I’ve dropped maybe 50/70 ILGM seeds in the last half dozen years or so. :+1:

I’ve had seeds take up to 7 days to decide to germinate. Daily dose of peroxide to keep water sterile and higher levels of Oxygen for the seedling.

I HATE Rapid Rooters. I go into a Solo cup of Promix HP if not in hydro. I reluctantly use RR’s for that.

I have 2 of my Tora Bora regular seeds that don’t want to split. I may have to use with hydrogen peroxide tomorrow.

Welcome to the community. It doesn’t matter if the seeds sink or not. I have 2 seeds that managed to get a tap root and both of them sunk.

Another seed did sink but didn’t split. The last did sink but didn’t split either. These two seeds will stay longer in damp toilet paper.

I haven’t used those but I would think they should be okay. The trick with seedlings is to manage moisture in a way that doesn’t drown them.

This seems true. Soil temperature is also important when sprouting

To quantify the discussion this is what Ed Rosenthal had to say “Drugstore peroxide is a 3% solution; if it’s used, add it at the rate of one part H202 to five parts water”. Roughly this would translate as follows:
One ounce shot glass and 1 1/4 teaspoons of peroxide. This may be the case where metrics is easier to work with. One fluid ounce is just under 30 milliliters. 20% dilution equals 6 milliliters. One of these handy syringes makes things easier.

thanks for responding so i went with dropping beans in shot glass of water after 12-18 hours they sunk… left them there for 36 hours watched the video on ILGM bout germination and it stated that after 12 hours hydra treatment it went to soil???

Some of the information in the guides is kinda dated.

There’s different methods that work. Some drop the seed straight into soil. Some place the seeds in a damp paper towel then put the paper towel in a ziplock bag. Some soak the seeds for 24hr and then place into a damp paper towel. Just soaking them has worked for me. All my seeds have popped within 24hr with the exception of blueberry auto seeds which have taken up to 48hr

I have a seed that was soaked for 24 hours, planted and left for 7 days. I dug it up, soaked it again, forgot about it, and 5 days later there was a little tail peeking.

All of my other seeds formed long tails within 36 hours.

You never know.

My seeds germinated in water in about 24 hours. I let them go another 12. Placed them in jiffy pellets. Temp control and moisture control under LED light it’s been 7days no sign of sprout trying to be patient. Any suggestions or ideas

Ok so I did the soak for 24 dropped into root riots and then we had life still do on two but I think I lost number 3 please look at attached photo and tell me what ya think

May need to open up the jiffy pod and investigate. I’ve had a few that tried to grow the wrong way. I just straightened them out and they turned out fine.

Looks like that one stretched and collapsed. Will need to get something to support it or move the entire cube to a solo cup with soil and bury the stem some.
