Question for those who use Fox Farms Ocean Floor mix. Do you mix in anything else with it (Perlite, etc) or just use it straight? TIA
I’m using it for the first time @Wishbone
But I just used it straight out of the bag and have had no issues doing so
I’m interested in seeing what other have done though
Happy growing
CB
It’s my first grow with FFOF, I went with it right from the bag.
I did 25% perlite and 10% clay balls in mine.
my first grow as well, did not add anything except for mykos
@Wishbone, I’m real new but I have been told not to add perlite from one of the mentors here… The fox farms soil has perlite and was told that adding perlite may make the mix to “hot”… Don’t take my word for it though… You can tag others for their thoughts. That soil is very rich
I add a couple cups of Diatomaceous Earth (food grade) a couple of cups of perlite and mix well . The D - E is for pest prevention.
I’m pretty sure perlite doesn’t make the soil “hot.” What would make the soil too hot is an overabundance of fertilizer, too much chemicals in the soil. Perlite is not a chemical nutrient at all it’s inert matter, just a soil aerator, allowing for good drainage and so roots get oxygen. You can add a lot of it to the soil it won’t get hot.
Typical analysis of perlite
70–75% silicon dioxide: SiO2
12–15% aluminium oxide: Al2O3
3–4% sodium oxide: Na2O
3–5% potassium oxide: K2O
0.5-2% iron oxide: Fe2O3
0.2–0.7% magnesium oxide: MgO
0.5–1.5% calcium oxide: CaO
Far from being inert and just for drainage @Joseph49 @Niala
Thank you, I appreciate the clarification. What I said was just what I thought. But I didn’t really know for sure, so… at this early stage I should probably be doing more listening than talking yep.
I used straight out the bag. It’s been the only medium I’ve used so far and all my plants love it.
all periltie has micro nutrients @Zombo
Just a FYI and if you get the mg perlitevtheyvadd nutrients to it as well
