I do 80% FFOF and 20% perlite. So for me it is, 4 scoops soil, 1 scoop perlite. Everyone does it a bit different probably, but are pretty close…
Around 30-40% of perilite to FFOF
I usually do around 33% aeration and it works well.
Thanks, Now i’m thinking about using something else but if I do decide to use FFOF for seedlings should I had perlite as well?
Always add perlite to any soil imo. And the FFOF is entirely to hot for seedlings. Just grab a cheapo potting soil to start her in. Anything local will be fine. $3 bag works. N yes perlite that as well. N dont forget. Drainage holes in da pot. But i start seedlings in starter tray or solo cup with plenty drainage and potting soil. Then when its big pot again i layer bottom half with FFOF (that i also amend to be hotter) then i mix it with softer soil (perlite obviously to all soil) and layer the top half with it. Set ur cup or tray in the top portion and layer ur soil. Then when u take ur cup out. U have a perfectly fitted hole to transplant ur baby into
No reason you cant add a little more perlite yo the mix
But ifbyou dont youll be ok as well
You can layer it, do FFOF for the bottom 2/3 or your soil or 1/2 FFOF on the bottom, and happy frog on top. When your plant is ready for the hotter soil, it will naturally seek it out.
I add the same perlite to my ffof. About 1/2 bag perlite to that bag of fox farm. I also add 1 cup bone meal and 1 cup dolomite lime.
I do that as well, no added perlite. I make a pot-shaped hole and have the happy frog both as the top 1/3, and going down into the center about another 1/3 (taproot area) just to be safe
Have you heard anything about their Lucky Dog mix? Just saw it on Amazon and it looks like another weed-soil mix, like a starter before Happy Frog or something (not coco or for azaleas or anything)

Another I was wondering about was Strawberry Fields. I’ve seen mention of it on here, but not much. Is there a specific use for this? Would this be the ‘juicy’ layer for the bottom of the pot?
Yea there is a place close by me that sells it, I havent looked too much into it, but it definitely looks like a goodbsoil.
I got bored, stoned, and didn’t want to lose my train of thought on this.
If the different FF soils are for different stages of plant growth, how do you think this would work? This is assuming a consensus that the ‘light peat and perlite mix’ for Lucky Dog is a good seedling soil. If not the top part would be just Happy Frog and sifted peat 50/50 (just for the micho’s in the HF)
This is also assuming that Strawberry Fields is for flowering.
Also, if the Lucky Dog sounds like a good seedling soil, I definitely won’t buy 3.5 cu.ft. for a 1-2 plant grow LOL
The reason I ask is that I just had a seed crack yesterday, and I’m following my own advice and ordering fresh soil. I have some OF and HF left over, but they’ve been sitting in tubs for a few months and I noticed moisture inside.
If anyone thinks it is worthwhile, I’ll give the Lucky Dog and Strawberry Fields a shot as well. If they are for some other specific purpose and I am missing my mark that is cool too.
And while discussing leftover soil, what is the best storage method? I have it stored inside in Rubbermaid tubs, but every time I buy pots they come in a 5-pack. I’m thinking that just storing extra soil in them might be a better option. Inquiring minds want to know!
@latewood, @Countryboyjvd1971, @garrigan62 and whoever else in the ILGM community
I actually store my soil in a 45gal storage container
I do this to keep soil bug free when in storage
You should keep it in a cool dry place as well
@Whodat66
They’ve been ‘cool and dry’ but in those tubs. Might have just been the AC, but I know it’s not good for it to set in moisture.
So if I took unused dirt and just stored it in the extra grow bags that should work, right?
I just leave my soil in the bag it came in and store it in a dry place till next time.
Do you know anything about the 2 soil mixes above(Strawberry Fields and Lucky Dog)?
