I’m starting a new grow this week. I’ll be utilizing autoflowers and starting seeds in final 3 gallon grow bag/pots. I’m NOT looking for advice on different soils to try
I’ll be using Fox farm Happy frog for the first time. After reading much on the soil there seems to be a lot of people happy with it so Im trying it… however, I have noticed many people say Happy frog is a pretty hot soil and sometimes early seedlings can get burnt when starting them directly into the soil.
My question is simple, after packing my 3 gallon grow pots with Happy frog can I simply take A fistful of dirt out of the pot and put a fistful of Coco core inside the hole and start the seedling there so it’s not quite as hot in the early rooting stage. I’m not sure if this makes any sense but it kind of made common sense to me but I’d love to have your feedback
Use straight Happy Frog, it’s the mildest of the FF mediums other than their seedling starter. I would recommend adding some additional perlite for drainage. The FFOF is the medium most growers state is too hot for seedlings and mix a 50/50 of this and Happy Frog
I was going to use a 50/50 but I’m going to try straight soil this time just as a test. I use advanced nutrients. I love their pH perfect blend. You can basically throw away your pH pen. I never adjust my pH in the water and it’s perfect every time. Great technology on their behalf. Also thank you very much for your reply and I’ve heard the same thing it’s a pretty mild soil but it never hurts to investigate first!
A mix of 70/30 soil to perlite should get the job done. Later down the road I might can talk you into coco . I switched from soil to coco about 3 years ago. I grow and live in the south and got tired of fighting all the bugs…a lot easier and cleaner in coco
You don’t have to talk me into using coco. I’ve used it many times and I love it! My only issue with coco is twice a day watering. I simply don’t have the time on this grow for watering. I have a few projects I’m working on that’s taking all my time so I thought straight soil would buy me a few hours to continue my projects
It will. I’ve always been a dirt farmer. I’ll probably start it this coming Winter. I’ve got more weed than I could possibly smoke or give away right now.
Right on, a surplus of weed is a good thing. I’m shutting mine down after this harvest for the upcoming move to the house I purchased last month and will actually have a grow room after some build work
Exactly what i did everything started fine but i need a humidifier i just hit veg stage an now my babys are curling up dont know if its the heat or lack of nutrients
Yes a humidifier is a must. Can you give us as much detail as possible about your grow. Equipment you’re using, type of plants, photo or autoflower, type of water you use, soil type, current runoff numbers, pot size, daytime and night time average environment relative humidity and temperature.
Basically providing us as much information on your grow as possible will help us help you. Providing clear pictures as well
@Lostgirl I’m getting ready for a Spring indoor session and am interested in the nutrients you’re going to use for your grow.
You state no need to check ph with that line, but what about water only days? Do the nutrients provide balance throughout?
And I’ve done a small runoff of HappyFrog with water only ph’d at 6.5 that came out at 5.5. Do the nutes balance to 6.5?
Thanks in advance for any response. Not sure is my questions make sense…?
@Willum
The nutrient line that I use is provided by advanced nutrients. I buy there pH perfect trio base nutrients. (and many more) nonetheless what you’re looking for is the pH perfect
Micro - Grow - Bloom
The pH perfect system is chelted to let your plants nutrients uptake at higher and lower pH ranges than normal.
Since you’re growing in Happy frog soil you would not use this until you get to around 900 PPM of runoff in your pre-charged soil.
You can get a feed chart off of their website it’s pretty standard straightforward. However start at 1/4 strength (I’ve never went over 1/4 strength) increases you see fit.
Prior to 30 days of no feeding you’re going to be watering your plant with plain water and calcium magnesium if needed pH to 6.5 you stayed in your runoff was 5.5 pH you need to adjust that to get your run off to around 6.5 (by using ph up or down)
Will the pH perfect give me its nutrients equalize everything during use the answer is yes. You should still check your PPM runoff but don’t pay attention to your pH.
Make sure before you start using these nutrients make sure that your soils pH is in proper range.
I have a recent journal from my current grow that tells you the nutrients that I use and why and what they do and tons of information that should help you throughout your grow.
It’s important that you get your pH in your soil under control as you don’t want it going out of range because things can go south in your Grow very quickly
I have very good results with Happy Frog. I have an experiment going now, one with grow dots and the other with jacks. They are at 39 days and were flipped today. Good luck with your grow @Lostgirl .
