First time growing outdoors

Good morning all, In the past 2 years I have harvested 9 plants growing in a tent indoors. This year I decided to grow a couple outdoors. I put them in the ground a week before Memorial Day. They are both about 8 - 9 feet high. I know the days are getting shorter so they should be starting to flower soon. About 2 weeks ago I trimmed all of the large fan leaves off of both for better air flow and more sun to the lower branches. My question is, should I continue trimming the large fan leaves ONLY, all the way up to harvest or should I leave them be?

Typical defol for flowering is at 21 and 42 days of flowering. Then only as needed to maintain the airflow and light penetration til harvest. Lookin good, sure you are a happy pappy.

So far so good, thank you I do appreciate you. They do look good. I am looking forward to harvest. Do you know when they generally start to flower? Should they be flowering now or does it start around the beginning of September? I live in the Central New York region. I think he harvested around the 2nd week of October last year but if flowering starts in the beginning of September that would mean his plants only had about 6 weeks of flowering. Do I follow the same criteria for the trichomes as I do when I grow in the tent? I don’t want to harvest too early.

Huge brain fart, I meant to say my brother grew outdoors last year…I should write these things before I smoke. Sorry!

Once light drops below 14 hours, you should start to see her pre buds or buttons. Do you know how long your days are right now?

Yes, regardless of where or how you grow a ripe fruit is the goal. Trichs always tell the tale of ripeness based on what you are after. Have you seen the trich chart?

Yes I do have a copy of the trich chart. I thought it would be the same as the indoor grow as well but I figured I should ask anyways. Right now from sunrise to sunset is about 10.5 hours.

You should be golden then. I would think you should be seeing the buttons anytime now. Prolly been below 12 hours for a few weeks.

PNW Seattle is 14.0 hours 8-23-2024 dawn to dusk.
My outdoor plants have started pre-flower.
3-days of rain, not helping.
Growing outdoors with harvest in the fall.
2022 dry fall (smoke & fires)
2023 wet fall (mold/rot starting in Oct).
2024 Oct 1 harvest date (too soon).

Good growing to you.

I’m in central New York also, I have a few plants starting to flower but I also have a couple not in flower yet, I guess it depends on the strain…

I miscalculated the time, its actually about the same here it’s 13.5 hours here. So hopefully I start seeing buttons soon.
Thank you everyone!

I’m also in CNY, and my outdoor grow is starting to stack up its early flowers. If the strain is the reason, then maybe it’s because they’re GDPs? Dunno. Seems faster than last year, when I had just two giant White Widows.

I have a lemon haze and a girl scout cookies extreme. Even in the tent these plants get pretty tall. I put them in the ground the week before Memorial day, they both had 5 nodes when I transplanted them. This is my first outdoor grow so I really don’t know what to expect. I imagine it is the same but on a larger scale.

Im in a similar area, how do you guys manage the high humidity at night time during flowering and the odor from the plants?

We’re lucky. It’s legal here, we have a large lot full of veg gardens, and the wood fence has a wire fence on top because the dog can fly. Odor isn’t an issue because of the size of the lot. There’s enough sun to keep dampness away unless it’s actively raining. A weak peroxide spray helps after the long rains we’ve had recently.

Luckily, I live in a rural area, so I don’t have to worry about the smell. My plants have not started budding yet and I wasn’t aware that I needed to worry about the damp nights. My plants are in a spot where they get sunshine all day, not just part of the day. Not sure if that’s helpful to keep mold from starting.

Here are some updated pictures. They still haven’t started budding yet. I am starting to worry. My brother thinks I should trim a lot of the large fan leaves. He had his first (very successful) outdoor grow last year and has 1 in this year.

DO you clone?

you could take the top foot off each stalk (releases growth below).
then
clone the chopped pieces.
I do

Not all survive, but that’s life.

I have not, but I am interested in how to do that. I guess my first question would be how much time is required from chopping the tops to being able to harvest them? I usually am on my way to Florida the middle of November! So if they need full vegetation and flowering cycles I won’t have the time, unfortunately.

PNW Rain season may have started.
Can’t answer your time question.
Forum threads have many clone serious growers.
Temps, method, environment, all affect growth rates.
I am a Darwinian Grower (only the strong survive).
I have cloned multiple methods with success.
My problem is I can’t control the calendar.
Month trips for “family” ruin growing for the duration.
Disney, Wedding, and soon the funeral.
I like playing in the dirt, from this side. These were just stuck in dirt.

Some in cups, some in dirt, domes sometimes.
Worked great until 8 days and 8 inches of rain.
Good news, my totes don’t leak.
They have become mud pools.

I hear you! Unfortunately my wife and I really don’t like the cold anymore, so my growing season is from March to November. I do grow 3 or 4 in the tent starting in March/April and a couple outside the end of May.
