Twist ties are fine. Anything to gently prop them up. It may not even become an issue but is something to prepare for.
Good morning everyone. Here are a few updated pictures. I kept the light at the same distance and increased the power to 50%. Dimmer is still on, currently 70 degrees and 72% humidity. Should I turn my humidifier off or keep it running since the numbers are getting higher?
Looks to me like you are only watering a little spot at the base of the plant.
You should start at the edge of the container and water around the edge and move inward towards the plant. You want those roots to fill that container. You need to water the whole thing to get them to do that.
I thought I was suppose to hold off on watering from the outside in until the plant start to grow more? A few articles I was reading were stating to just mist the base of the plant and the bottle for a week or two then start watering the plant from the outside in. Do you think I should start doing that now?
You donāt want to drown it. Think about this way, if you only water in that little spot that is where the roots will stay. If your moisture is at the bottom and on the sides the roots will go looking for it and fill the pot with roots.
I was just reading in another thread where the grower said the roots never filled the pot. I suspect they were doing the same thing. Incomplete watering.
Here is something new to me. Used to be the consensus on here that we didnāt want the plant to suck up the runoff, so we would water and feed until it was running out the bottom then throw it away. Now I feeding from the bottom and watering from the top. I know about how much they drink every four days, so I mix a gallon of nutes and pour it in the saucer and let the plant suck it up. On watering days I water from the top to 20% runoff and throw it away.
@roost1 is correct. You should still not water any closer than the edge of where the cover was. The idea is to make the roots stretch out and look for their water. Bigger root mass-healthier plant.
This was in 3 gal fabric pot.
I reuse that expensive dirt so I have emptied every pot and every time my pots are clear full of roots.
When I get home today Ill start watering from the edge of the pot up to the edge of the cup. I had no idea it worked like that, thanks for the tips! Since they only sprouted about 5 days ago how much water should I start filling the pot with? Or should I just start spraying the edges first working my way to the plant? I want to make sure I dont over water.
For sprouts, until they have a couple of leaves anyway, the best way to determine is to stick your finger in the dirt a couple inches out from the base of the sprout. If it has any moisture at all an inch or so deep it does not need watering. When it is really dry, water it deeply and slowly.
When they get real leaves and look like real plants, the best method I have found is go by weight. Lift the pot when you know it is dry. Then only water when it feels the same. Sometimes I water every other day sometimes only twice a week. Depends on their appetite.
That makes sense. All iāve ever done as far as water goes is spraying the center where the plant is. Ive never watered this soil before so the outside will have no water at all. These are 5 gallon pots so you think 1 gallon of water will do the trick slowly just to make sure I dont over water?
I am sure the soil had some moisture right out of the bag. Your dry weight will probably be a little less than what they are but it will do. Lift them and sway them slightly to get a āfeelā for them now. Be careful with their delicate little selves.
Now, Yes 1 gal slow soak will probably last for several days.
I would still be doming them at this point. I use a family size juice jug cut in half or glass bowl.
3/4 of a gallon should soak that good, then let it go for a week.
Iāve got a few 1 gallon jugs of distilled water ill use tonight on them. I will post some pictures later tonight.
I just used a 1 gallon jug and within the first 1/4 of a gallon the water was overfilling on the tray. I used just 1 gallon on all 3 and they seem to all be spilling out the side. I noticed my humidity was up to 78% and the temp was around 72.
As I figured, the soil was moist to begin with and now is certainly wet enough and should hold you for at least a week (unless your girls tell you different).
I like the fabric pots because it is almost impossible to over-water them. They ābreatheā better and do not let the roots get soggy. When I water 1 gal into my 3 gal planter, I usually get about a quart of runoff out the bottom. I water slowly enough that none runs out the sides. My soil is nearly bone dry when I water and is very hydro-phobic. I have to dribble it until it starts to absorb properly.
Wow a gallon of water for a 5 day old seedling seems like overkill. A plant that size is not drinking much water at all. You could probably water 4oz or less and be good. @Not2SureYet do keep track of how much water your seedings get?
Actually none at all from the soil if it is domed or humidity is high enough. Roots are just developing and supply nothing to the above ground portion yet. Those cotyledons are like the yolk of an egg and have everything the plant needs to get started.
I looked but couldnāt see for sure. My guess is it would be close to the same either way. I grow in coco and donāt start in a final pot since it is much harder to know where you are at to water. Even in coco. It is easy to over water. I will give info for coco though.
If you have watered to run off. I wouldnāt water for at least 5 - 7days now. I totally agree with @HMGRWN there. Those 5 gallon pots will hold a lot of water. I donāt use a gallon of water till I am well into flower. And not even then on a lot. Your humidity looks good. I remove my domes after the second day when I did. Basically when the plant was an inch tall. I know have a dedicated veg tent so I can control the humidity with out a dome. I have a picture in here a lot I use to show what over watering can do early on. I had a tiny little plants for almost 4 weeks. And I mean maybe 2" tall. Once the pot dried out. She took off fast.
And as mentioned above. It can take 4 or 5 days for you to see any real growth while it grows roots. But once it starts. The growth will come quick
Yes I agree, so why recommend giving it a gallon of water? Overwatering a seedling is not the best practice.
