I am a month into my first grow. My plants are pretty stout at around 11 inches on their 7th node. The canopy seems like they should be fairly even as is, and I was leaning toward minimal training on my first grow just to learn the plant. But since this is probably the time to do it, I thought I would ask some folks with more experience. What would you do with these?
How tall is your growing space? This would be one detail to look at.
Your plants
look good from here.
Thanks! My tent is 6.5ft tall. Plenty of space left for now.
I am a fan of topping photos at least once above the 5th node or so. Wider bushier plants. Topping is not too stressful in my experience. (more so on the grower than the plant)
Topping a plant leans more to that of a personal preference.
One decides on this depending on grow space and the need to fit into their space at harvest time. As well as what type like a scrog net, etc.
Here is a look at mine. They are 55 days old and 15 days in 12/12 flower.
My tent is as tall as yours. Notice my lights hang down low. My lights needs to be 20 to 30 inches above. So I have planned accordingly to keep them in check.
Here is where I topped these two days ago.
One thing to keep in mind is once you flip plants will usually double or more in height within the first 2 or 3 weeks.
If that’s an issue then you can top or flip early to help keep the height in check. Me personally, I top after the 6th node and remove the bottom 2 nodes.
These plants were topped and removed the bottom 2 nodes. I flipped them around day 40 from beans popping.
I went ahead and topped 3 plants and did some light defoliating. Left 2 that are lagging a bit. Thanks again for the feedback, we’ll see how it goes!
What cha got planned with them?
For a few years I topped all my plants on the forth node, regardless.
As time went on some plants I didn’t need to top, I needed them to get taller or wider.
I started to do what ever I needed to do to them to allow the plant to fill its space for maximum yield. This was a priority to me.
As in the photo of my grow above that I mentioned, I wanted the plants to get as tall as I could before I topped them.
Then I will begin to train the plant into a scrog situation.
I can’t wait to watch them grow. ![]()
Welcome to the neighborhood

I always top my plants. Training them is part of the fun
Those tops make nice clones, free plants!![]()

Topping will increase the yield with some LST training for indoor grows ![]()
Free plants are good
