Just kicking into flower with a couple of my first plants and want to start planning ahead for drying and curing. Planning to get a mesh drying rack for the tent and then just use that for humidity and temp controls. I’ll long term store in amber Mason jars. Looked at the burping lids but saw enough complaints about faulty seals to avoid that option. Might just manually burp which seems tedious but not terrible. Also saw Grove bags that balance the humidity for you which seems nice but read long term storage beyond about 20 days was a bad idea but since I plan on jars and figured a 21 ish day cure anyways seems pretty on the money. Anyone else have luck with just curing in the bags and then using good old trusty jars for long term storage?
Strange regarding Grove bags as I’ve heard long term storage is where this product shines. Can you link your source? Would love to hear the other side of the argument.
Im going to try those humidity packets in mason jars this time around. A few buddies have used them and like them. Last harvest i burped in mason jars until my preference but im having a much larger yield this time.
I’m not sure where I read that but it was just on an old forum somewhere. They said they saw bigger moisture drops in the bags compared to Mason jars after like 20 something days. Definitely interested to hear everyone’s experience though. Do you long term store in these bags? How do you feel it compares to glass? I mainly just want them for the easy curing process but would consider using them for storage too.
I thought about that but read about issues with some of them removing the flavor. Do you have a link to the type your buddies had luck with?
Unfortunately i do not know what brand they used…now you got me thinking. I might have to do some extra research myself.
It seems the general consensus is that you want your buds pretty close to ideal moisture level before you put the humidity pack in the jar. Sounds like ill be manually burping for a week or two, then adding the pack. I already bought them so at least i can do some with and some without and find out the truth myself
Yeah let us know because that seems like a good simple option too. I ended up ordering some of the Grove bags to try. I just know if I have them in jars to monitor and manually burp I’ll just be stress staring at the meter all day because of my tendency for high anxiety.
I’ve kept weed in a Grove bag for six months and it was great when it came out. I do not touch my harvest until it has been in the grove bag for at least 8 weeks.
I did recently get a Cannatrol…and it is awesome…but I still use Grove bags because the Cannatrol cannot handle my whole harvest. I think these two products have changed the game as far as the home grower being able the produce high quality end buds to smoke
On my last two grows, I wet trimmed, dried for about a week, into 1/4 lb grove bags with a little RH meter for about 3 weeks, then into wide mouth quart mason jars with Boveda packs (62% size 8) for long term storage. I’m not a big flavor connoisseur, but process works for me. One 1/4 lb grove bag fills about 3 quart jars.
I ve posted this before IMO mason jars or grove bags both will give great results. But I was riding the fence when comparing the two.I did jars for years .then tried grove bags.Pictured is some Godfather OG that’s almost 18 months. It was smooth with absolutely no cough. And almost as potent when it was first cured.GFOG has some authority, definitely a night time smoke.
All that being said, try both methods and make your decision.
I use just the grove bags now unless I’m fortunate to have a big harvest. And this year just may be a big harvest.growing outdoors with 8 in the ground.
Thanks everybody! Glad to hear people having success with them. I ordered 20 of the child safe 1 oz bags to try for my first cure and a moisture meter to check the dry before bagging.
Anybody use both the child safe and regular seal type? I went child seal hoping they’d be better than the regular ones because I saw a lot of busted Ziploc reviews. Should I just get over it and buy a heat sealer?
I do not think you need to heat seal…I stopped after my first grow woth them. I suspect the zip lock gets some plant material in it and that sometimes causes failure…I watch this closely.
I have had better luck with the bigger bags1 lb, 1/2lb, and 1/4 lb. Not sure why…but suspect the larger environment in the bag helps them do their magic
Thanks for the additional info.
Good to know about the seal. Theirs were the single bead ones and they were peeling off because the adhesive wasn’t strong enough. I went with the child safety ones because it was a double bead and I was hoping they’d have more adhesive for a better stick.
Also good to know about the larger sized ones. Unfortunately I already ordered and don’t want to pay the 20 shipping again. I’ll keep that in mind for future orders. Theory was for this time with first dry and cure if I screw up a batch or two maybe I’ll still save the majority by splitting them up. Plus I could pop one bag at 8 weeks and then let the others slow cure while I work through them. Should I go shorter or longer with the smaller bags do you think?
@MedLifeCrisis not sure who posted this but they use painters tape to seal after closing the zip lock.instead of heat seal.I tried it and I have no complaints.Just an fyi
Good tip, I’ve actually already got some sitting around and can’t hurt. If nothing else keeps me from anxiously opening them.
Another quick follow-up, have you tried the heat seal too?
I have a heat seal machine but I haven’t used it with the grove bags.imo the painters tape is 100% air tight. So the tape makes it easy to get into the grove bag then tape it up till the next time.
Nice, great tip. This will save on having to slice them open and makes spending the little extra for the thicker zip worth it more. Appreciated!
I just tried the half pound bags seem to be a hit, but fairly new to me
