Going to harvest kind of soon - I’ve never really cured correctly before - I saw there are airtight sealed jars with hygrometers/thermomemters in the lid on Amazon but they’re expensive. Can I just use pickle jars with a several small readers inside the jars - does it really have to be airtight, or can I just put the lid on?
Sounds cheap, but the amazon ones are like $60 for the XL and it won’t even fit all the harvest in at once. Anyone use these things?
Or I could buy sealed jars without the fancy thing on the lid and use the small cheap readers in those jars? I also just noticed these readers are off by quite a bit here put on the same spot. Crap.
Those small meters must be really cheap. They should not be that far off from each other.
Those "curing canisters are a waste also. Any jar with a seal will work but you need better hygrometers.
I along with many others are using Grove Bags for curing and storage.
No guess work and mason jars are cheap and can be sealed with vacuum sealer. After I get just below 60%, I toss in a 62% Boveda pack and vacuum seal the jar. After a few months the chlorophyll is gone and the smoke is awesome.
I use peanut butter jars. Glass large smuckers natural ones.
Works fine. Seals tight. Wide mouth for easy access.
Whatever you use should seal tightly.
You want to be able to maintain the correct humidity level once you reach it.
Maybe depends on how far off they are?
None of these are very accurate, but usually one only needs a pretty good idea. a few % either way is not a big deal. Only thing I care about is below 62%. 55-62% reading good enough for me usually. Bovida packs add or remove small differences.
Burping was a drag. That’s why I made temp lids with Hygrometers in them. No more burping.
I just replace with normal lid when RH is where I need it to be.
Grove bags for me have been awesome i will never go back to jars i do a slow dry 10 to 14 days and then bag them i dont burp the bags or anything fill them up and forget about them for a month when i go back after a month they are still sitting at 58-60% RH from the day i put them in there i have smaller jars to keep for on hand herb but the bags stay in the basement where its cool and dark i also use a moisture meter to check the moisture in the buds to know when to bag once my buds hit a average 11-12% rh is when i bag
If you’re talking about Grove Bags, get the plain black ones or plain black with the window (just a clear spot in the bag to look at the buds). They have really cool graphic design, strain specific bags, but to me they do t do well for long term storage. The plain ones do great.
I use them in a quart jar and up. Don’t think it matters much. For a really big jar like 1/2 gallon I use two just cuz. I reuse them so not a big deal. BTW- to reuse if one gets left out and dries, just wet paper towel and squeeze most of the water out. Then wrap around the pack. (Should be able to see through a single layer of paper towel). Gel in pack should feel liquid again. If not re-soak and try again!
